Do you have your Terrablock formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled)? It should only be Extended with no journaling (stay away from journaling anytime you’re doing media, especially video. If it is journaled, that may be causing the problem.

No re-digitizing necessary, you can just pan the clips. BUT, you can simply select each pair if you’ve alreayd edited to the timeline and press option+L to make the pair a stereo pair, which should automatically pan track 1 to the L and track 2 to the R.

I don’t know about that, but I’d suggest opening the clip in QuickTime Pro alone and exporting it from there with 48k audio. Then reconnect your media in FCP to the new file.

2 Things:
1. Under the RT pulldown at the top left of your timeline, be sure that RT is set to UNLIMITED RT. Also, make sure that your Playback Video Quality and Playback Frame Rate settings under this pulldown are both set to DYNAMIC.
2. Turn of the “Warn on dropped frames during playback” option. If your render bar is displaying Orange/Unlimited, frames may be dropped (hence dynamic frame rate above) in order to keep playback in RT.

To my knowledge, timecode is only stored in the browser when footage is offline. Once captured, the footage (quickTime movies) holds the timecode information in metadata itself. Is it possible that your footage has become corrupt in some way? This would explain why you’re having the problem across multiple projects with the same footage.

Are you sure that this audio clip was recorded properly? Usually a green bar will show up if the audio is not a format that FCP is expecting (like MP3, or recorded at something other than the sequence audio setting).

You can’t change the timebase of a sequence once footage is placed into it. I’m not sure if this would work, but you could try to make a new 23.98 sequence, then copy all your footage from your 29.97 sequence into your 23.98 footage. Final Cut shouldn’t alter the length of these clips – it will determine their lengths based on their time code and frame rate, not just their frames, regardless of what your sequence time base is set to. Once this is done, Recapture your clips as 23.98. They should reconnect fine automatically as 23.98 in the new sequence. (Keep in mind however, that you should export a reference video first from the 29.97 sequence or save this as a new project before recapturing if you don’t wish to overwrite all the 29.97 footage)

I’m not sure what system you’re used to, and I hope I don’t sound too defensive here, but Final Cut definately does not suck at this feature. Final Cut is PRESERVING your media. In most cases, Final Cut will err on the side of preserving any media you have (just in case it may be irreplacable) unless you explicitly tell it not to do so, rather than assuming that you want to delete media that you actually don’t want to delete. And remember that every clip in the timeline is linked to the ENTIRE memdia – you’re just including that media from In to Out in your sequence, but all the media is still there for you to edit, so Final Cut is trying to recapture all of it.
You have to select your sequence in the Browser or select everything in your sequence and use the media manager (File:Media Manager). You can look up the media manager in the manual or in Final Cut Pro Help (which is just the manual anyway) to find out how to use the media manager, but for what you’re doing, you want to choose “create offline” and check the “delete unused media” checkbox, which will truncate your clips in the timeline into just the bits that are used. I’d suggest putting 1-2 sec handles so you can refine the sequence later if you need to, or slip clips if they get reconnected a frame or two off after recapture. Finally, make sure that you see the “Set sequences to:” setting to the resolution/codec/compression that you’re going to be recapturing at, so that when you recapture everything plays back in real time.
I think you’ll find this process quite safe and efficient, and you’ll grow to like it.

You can turn off autorender in the bottom right of the user prefrences window, which will prevent FCP from autorendering anything if you leave it open and inactive for an X amount of time (as in overnight).
The problem you’re running into is happening because the Open playhead sync is now opening the render file in the viewer that it is playing in the canvas/timeline (rather than opening the multiclip). To get your multiclip playback back, the easiest way would be to turn of visibility on the video tracks that contain your multiclips, then turn visibility back on again. This will disconnect your video from the render files and display them using RT again. However your render files WILL still exist and take up space on your system, but they will not be serving any purpose. The better way to get your clips back without sacrificing disk space would be to use the render manager under tools, and delete the render files associated with your sequence. Once the render files are deleted, Final Cut will not recognize these ‘rendered’ segments as so, and will begin to play them back again in RT.

Have you captured on this computer before, and if so are you using a new hard drive? Your hard drive may not be up to snuff for video editing (you need a 7200 RPM 8MB Cache drive with at least a FireWire 400 connection for DV… do not use USB for video on a mac).
