Final Cut HD freezes in Capture Now
For some reason when I am playing in Log & Capture and hit capture now, the screen captures a couple of frames and then the capture now preview freezes, but the tape keeps playing in the deck . . . then the spinning circle of death pops up on my mac. It stays like that for a long time even after I hit escape. Then I get the message: “Dropped frames were detected during the last capture attempt.” When I try capturing the same tape with the same deck on another computer that has final cut HD, I don’t have this problem. When I try caputre now on final cut express I don’t have this problem either. I just de-fragged the whole computer and it’s running great except for this one glitch that I can’t seem to fix.

Shane’s Stock Answer #10: ALLOCATING DISKSPACE
1) Set a limit on Capture Now. Never have that box unchecked. Set it to 60 min if you want the whole tape.
2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn’t cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin’s script to shut it off before you use FCP:

4) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn’t, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.

Thanks for the good advice Shane. Unfortunately, none of those steps fixed the problem. Any other advice?

A good workaround is to NOT USE Capture Now.
Set some In-points and Out-points and log the cuts, then Batch Capture.
That has worked flawlessly for me for YEARS.

Are you using a Laptop and an external FW HD by any chance?
What is your set up on this computer?

Have you captured on this computer before, and if so are you using a new hard drive? Your hard drive may not be up to snuff for video editing (you need a 7200 RPM 8MB Cache drive with at least a FireWire 400 connection for DV… do not use USB for video on a mac).
