hello, im having a problem understanding how final cut batch captures. i had a project where i digitized the entire tapes at a low resolution. now i have my sequence cut and i want to only batch capture the clips used in my timeline. when i try to do it, final cut attempts to recapture the entire tape again since thats how i had it logged. I went into the sequence and made all clips independent. i also ctrl-clicked the sequence from the project window and selected “make sequence clips independent”. still no result. i even copied my sequence clips to a new bin and tried recapturing the bin. I read in the help file to uncheck “use logged clip settings” box , but still no result. what am i missing here? final cut really sucks at this feature. i dont understand why it should be so difficult.

Have you used the media manager yet?

I’m not sure what system you’re used to, and I hope I don’t sound too defensive here, but Final Cut definately does not suck at this feature. Final Cut is PRESERVING your media. In most cases, Final Cut will err on the side of preserving any media you have (just in case it may be irreplacable) unless you explicitly tell it not to do so, rather than assuming that you want to delete media that you actually don’t want to delete. And remember that every clip in the timeline is linked to the ENTIRE memdia – you’re just including that media from In to Out in your sequence, but all the media is still there for you to edit, so Final Cut is trying to recapture all of it.

You have to select your sequence in the Browser or select everything in your sequence and use the media manager (File:Media Manager). You can look up the media manager in the manual or in Final Cut Pro Help (which is just the manual anyway) to find out how to use the media manager, but for what you’re doing, you want to choose “create offline” and check the “delete unused media” checkbox, which will truncate your clips in the timeline into just the bits that are used. I’d suggest putting 1-2 sec handles so you can refine the sequence later if you need to, or slip clips if they get reconnected a frame or two off after recapture. Finally, make sure that you see the “Set sequences to:” setting to the resolution/codec/compression that you’re going to be recapturing at, so that when you recapture everything plays back in real time.

I think you’ll find this process quite safe and efficient, and you’ll grow to like it.
