Thanks Guys! I didn’t really think about Bexel, and we use other broadcast gear from them over here (and occasionally Wexler too). I’ll look into the other names you mentioned too.

Do you have any direct experience of hiring from any of the above? It would be good to know I could get the spec I wanted etc. from someone who knows the products…

You must have your external video on if you are seeing some frames. What you describe happens when the sequence video settings and the output device settings don’t match.

Using firewire, you can only send DV video, so check that’s what the sequence uses. Try capturing again from your camera, and dropping this capture into a new EMPTY timeline/sequence. When FCP asks if you want to match the sequence settings to the clip settings, hit ‘yes’.

Make sure this plays ok – if it does, either compare the sequence settings here to your other sequence, or just copy and paste all the clips from your ‘bad’ sequence into this new one.

Is the audio and video on the same drive. Almost sounds like an external drive went to sleep, as it was occuring after you left it for a while.

If this is on specific P2 volumes, it suggests corrupted data on those volumes. I would suggest transferring smaller batches to see if you can narrow down the problem. There should be no real reason why your MBP would cause a problem.

You don’t have Perian installed on the laptop, do you?

After you select the in and out on the clip, you need to log it, then hit batch capture to start the capture process.

I really recommend reading the FCP manual (it’s installed on every Mac with FCP on) as it will talk you through all the possible capture options.

There is also an excellent basics forum here for people starting out on FCP – it’s a little gentler! Good luck with all your work in the future.

The audio on tracks 3 and 4 are ‘stereo paired’, so FCP treats them as a single item. If tracks 1 & 2 are supposed to be stereo as well, you can link them by selecting them both and hitting alt+L. You can tell this has worked on the timeline as stereo linked tracks have a pair of small arrows pointing at each other on the timeline.

I think you’re referring to motion trails, like the one’s you would get if you photograph car lights on a highway on a long exposure.

This would be very tricky to re-create, as each object in the picture would have it’s own individual motion and direction. The nearest you can get in basic FCP terms is a motion blur, or directional blur – but that would effect the ‘background’ as well as the moving objects. I can’t think of any quick fix for this without something like Sapphire filters (motion trails should do this).

If you’re prepared to wait, don’t get the iMac – you will be disappointed if you want to capture any broadcast formats. Get a refurb Mac Pro and an AJA or BlackMagic card. With an internal array (cheap to run and maintain) you can do almost anything.

From personal professional experience I would recommend the G-Technology family of drives. I currently use 2 G-SPEED es arrays on the main edit, and several G-RAID and G-DRIVE units for onset and location work.

I use a pair of G-DRIVE Q’s raided on the e-SATA expresscard because they’re more portable and faster than a single G-SATA.

I have never had a single failure using this company’s products, and I own a number of them. I would not touch Lacie, however, with a sizable barge-pole after multiple failure.

Other G-SATA solutions are available. I don’t work for G-Tech by the way!
