It seems that the version of trapcode plugins you are using are not compatible with the universal 5.1 version of FCP.
Trapcode do not officially support FCP, only After effects and Combustion (sort of) – take a look at their support pages. Many filters do not work with the new intel macs, or the universal version of FCP, and as they do not officially support FCP, don’t expect anything to change soon. These filters only work because FCP has limited compatability with after effects filters.
You can use them in after effects, or get an alternative set of filters. Genart’s sapphire has a nice rays filter, but it’s pricey.
A better alternative is to install the previous version of FCP on an external drive, allowing you to run it and do the trapcode renders in the older version, then import quicktimes back into the sequence on 5.1.1. I have read here recently of people installing both versions on a single system, I THINK – so have a look at previous posts. Unless someone else can help here? A walk-through for doing this would be nice.

I can only speak for the Mac setup.
You have everything you need for a DV/HDV setup. I would not bother upgrading for the moment. You do not need a Blackmagic card unless you are interested in inputting or outputting SDI to a Digibeta deck. If you work totally in DV you have no need for this – it will not make your system faster.
If time is REALLY critical, then you could consider a new Intel Mac Pro, but you will need to change any cards you run in the system, and not all of your plug-ins will work. On the current builds of FCP, you will not see massive speed increases in renders from your current system. This may change with future, Intel optimised updates. Maybe.

FCP doesn’t have an external video option for anamorphic. It just outputs video at the aspect ratio that your sequence is in. So either:
1) Your sequence is not anamorphic. You would see this in your canvas window though. Assuming you missed this, open the sequence settings and check the anamorpic box.
2) Your MONITOR is in the wrong aspect ratio. This will either be changed on the menu (in most cases) or the button on the front panel labeled 16:9.
Or check 3) that in the Blackmagic setup you have not set the output to letterbox, or crop, or whatever the current set of options are (I use Kona).
Sorry if 1) and 2) are horribly obvious – but you DID say it was a stupid question 😉

If you’ve asked everywhere, someone already told you to trash your preferences, right? Final Cut Rescue is a nice way of doing this.
Otherwise, why not just reinstall FCP? Only takes a few minutes. If that doesn’t cure it, it’s probably a problem with your system fonts, and you will need to reinstall OSX.
Interesting effect though…

August 18, 2006 at 8:02 am in reply to: Went to the Apple/Sony XDCAM HD Road show today in Seattle.[Danrnw] “Using file transfer mode, FCP will see your video 1.8 times
faster then real time. Not nearly what I was hoping for.”They’re not the only working group to have this problem – usually it’s because the mxf wrappers are different, and need to be converted. Every time someone promises a high speed ingest system, it all falls down on this. Apple need to sort this out – I understand it to be a QT issue.
A Cameraman friend of mine has looked at this, and the Panasonic HDDVCPro version. At the moment, he is leaning toward the Panny, he said he prefered the ‘look’ and we all know that HDDVCPro works really nice in FCP.
My two pence.

Have to agree with Shane – you need a proper monitor for colour correction/motion viewing. Although I have not tried the multibridge extreme, I have used the HDSDI-DVI pod they make, and was very disappointed with the picture quality on a 23″ Mac monitor.
Matrox now make a box (Axio? something like that) that claims to ‘resync’ the second DVI output from a Mac and display it properly on a computer monitor. They claim it gives a much better picture, but you would need to see that for yourself. I’d still go with two 23″ displays (can be driven by the standard gfx card I believe) or two of the Dell 24″ displays, which are generally held to be excellent, and have a better set of inputs.
Can really recommend the Kona 3 capture card for SD/HD. Also has a breakout box available for it (K-box) and really just lacks the DVI output that ain’t all that anyway. Haven’t tried the HDMI out on the newer units, so trial that if you can. Blackmagic make excellent products, so I’m not saying don’t get the multibridge, just giving you another option really. Perhaps that DVI out is now excellent… AJA’s customer care is also great.

August 17, 2006 at 7:10 pm in reply to: how to export aiff sound with original tape TC for transcription work ?Since an AIFF file cannot contain timecode, why not export a small quicktime (using H.264) with burnt-in timecode on it (using the timecode filter) and give the transcriber the sound AND the vision. I assume since you’re giving them an AIFF they have a computer, so should be able to view the QT on that.
All our transcriptions are done from a VHS with BITC – old skool!

Moi Peter?
Sorry I missed you at Tour de France. Got paid to do nothing (literally) for 4 hours – then left. Ah, EVS work.

For a pretty balanced view:
https://www.macworld.com/2006/08/reviews/macprorev/index.php?lsrc=mwrss
Except that Macworld only use iMovie renders as a test – never bear any relation to FCP render times.
He makes one good point – that noone has been able to test the 3Ghz quads. That may just change my mind….
Ben
PS – don’t worry, my 2 hour render will end soon, and I’ll stop posting to myself. Gotta get a quad (any quad).

Hmm – still trying to make some sense of the different specs they used in that test. The list given in the ‘The Test’ section doesn’t tally with the specs next to the pro apps perfomance chart.
With regards to Apples and oranges, to be fair to the authors, they are comparing dual socket machines – it’s just that some have dual cores, some single. Still would have liked to see the quad G5 in there though.
I did find one reason to go for the MacPro in there however – User upgradable CPUs! yay…
