Problem w/ thrid party plugins
Posted by Marcus Ionis on August 22, 2006 at 8:32 pmWe purchased Shine & Starglow filters from TRAPCODE for our Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 Station
The filters worked perfectly for our project.
We upgraded our system to Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 and have difficulty loading the Trapcode Filters
The message we received is AE EFFECTS ERROR: UNABLE TO LOAD PLUGIN “SHINE”.
Then it will prompt a window saying AE EFFECTS ERROR: UNABLE TO LOAD PLUGIN “SHINE”. DO YOU WISH TO LOAD PLUGIN FROM ANOTHER DIRECTORY.
Once that occurs, then I’ll click onto YES and follow the directory to library/application support/final cut pro system support/plugins.
Final I’ve selected the plugin “SHINE” and nothing happens. Is there an alternative to this this?
Has anyone else had this problem with the TRAPCODE Filters?Peter Wiggins replied 19 years, 8 months ago 6 Members · 9 Replies -

August 22, 2006 at 8:43 pmDoes the filter support 5.1.1? The plug-in structure is different from 5.0 from what I understand so plug-ins have patches and updates to work in 5.1

August 22, 2006 at 8:49 pmIt seems that the version of trapcode plugins you are using are not compatible with the universal 5.1 version of FCP.
Trapcode do not officially support FCP, only After effects and Combustion (sort of) – take a look at their support pages. Many filters do not work with the new intel macs, or the universal version of FCP, and as they do not officially support FCP, don’t expect anything to change soon. These filters only work because FCP has limited compatability with after effects filters.
You can use them in after effects, or get an alternative set of filters. Genart’s sapphire has a nice rays filter, but it’s pricey.
A better alternative is to install the previous version of FCP on an external drive, allowing you to run it and do the trapcode renders in the older version, then import quicktimes back into the sequence on 5.1.1. I have read here recently of people installing both versions on a single system, I THINK – so have a look at previous posts. Unless someone else can help here? A walk-through for doing this would be nice.

August 22, 2006 at 8:52 pmBoris Continuum Complete has outstanding light rays. I stopped bothering with Trapcode after I started using that filter set. It’s very comparable with the light rays.

August 22, 2006 at 8:59 pmBoris don’t claim compatability with 5.1 on their website. Does it work Walter? Always liked the look of this set, but we have two Sapphire licenses to get some value out of… And they now have proper Universal support.

August 22, 2006 at 9:48 pmThe Trapcode filters are supported only on After Effects.
E-mailed Trapcode and here’s the response:Hello,
I’m afraid our plug-ins do not support FCP. I don’t know FCP so I cannot help you with the problem.
Best,
Peder Norrby / TrapcodeHas this been a problem with other 3rd party filters.
Obviously Trapcode doesn’t have a patch. So this is going to make future project challenging.Thank You All for Your Wealth of Knowledge

August 22, 2006 at 11:29 pmBasically, any plugin written in a compiled language will need upgrading for the Universal Binary version. This includes any that use the After Effects plugin framework in FCP. However, all the plugins written in FXScript should just work without change. These include Joes Filters, Nattress Effects, CHV, GCM DVE and Lyric Media’s plugins.
Cheers,
John
