EVS are promising an area demo-ing (what I assume) is FCP and AVID workflows. If it’s a quick transfer it’s got to be interesting, because EVS networks are everywhere on sports OBs and because they’re so reliable as a means of aquiring the feed – then playing the edit back.
Check it out. And no – I wouldn’t touch clean edit with a big stick. That’s what IP director is supposed to avoid.

Big editing demo? That involve any third party devices? Such as EVS XStore or IPDirector? I’m guessing your edit whilst you’re ingesting thing will be involved (forgotten name).
Try to get over there, but may be snowed under with eager punters! LOL.

This comes up so often it should be on the banner top of screen: “Final Cut Pro Cow – we use MPEG streamclip for DVD footage”. Especially now DVD recorders are everywhere, and people seem to have the mistaken impression that DVD=Broadcast quality (not referring to the questioner)!
Shame it’s free, those guys could be making a fortune. Charge $5 a go!

Is that because DV has lower field first frame ordering in PAL? Did you capture as uncompressed?
We only work for broadcast in Digibeta or HDCAM, so I don’t have an analogue RGB option. It would lower the quality anyway.

To what purpose? In order to make them accessible from other stations? If you’re going to put the capture scratch on a local drive on the machine, you should put the project files there as well, and assign each student the same workstation each time they’re in – if that’s at all possible. The project files themselves are very small, so why split them from the scratch?
What you want to do may not work any other way for now, until you can get a FC RAID solution for video work only. You’ll also massively improve the performance of each system, as it won’t be looking on ethernet for other items.

You’re probably right – be a slip-up for Apple not to have it ready for then. When I have the chance to grill an Apple rep about it, I’ll report back. I expect we’ll see some speedup with 5.x.x (next release) then more on FCP6 running 64-bit on Leopard.

Yes, it was in reponse to a question about 5.1 – that’s the latest version they had to hand and it’s clearly stated as such in the article.
It seems to me that Apple are very much in the habit of using beta releases to test performance of late – mostly before now it was because they wanted to benchmark unreleased universal versions of their apps, as they did with the release of the MBP. Every single Intel Mac release has contained benchmarks from betas – and with the non-universal software, I can at least see some logic to it. Now it seems they are doing it just to ‘massage’ the figures. I’m not saying I don’t believe them, I just don’t like the principal. It’s not provable, and that breeds distrust.

That depends on what they want to use it for. The Animation codec is lossless but gives very big files and long import/exports. It also may not work on a PC, depending on the system/drives etc.
Some 10-bit codecs, such as Blackmagic, are available for PCs.
If you can give us the specifics of the workflow you and your PC friend are using, someone here will give you the best solution.
