If you know of used Mac Pros, I’ll buy em. eBay would not support the notion they are going cheap.
Avid and PPro run just fine on Macs. And so does FCP7

[MIke Guidotti] “Most schools have shared edit bays which require multiple user logins as well as SAN storage. That basically rules iMovie X out. oh, sorry FCP X.
“Whilst I’m a little bored of saying this here (but everyone is forgiven for not seeing useful information in this godawful mess of noise) FCPX can easily be made to be seen on a SAN – my own vendor made it work in a day.
Do people really think these issues with WEEK OLD SOFTWARE are forever problems? Like others here, I look forward to revisiting some of these posts in a year’s time.
Everything in X is new. It will take time to reintegrate EVERYTHING with it. It will take time to learn how to use it.
Like Shane, I’m pissed off Apple junked the goodwill I have with my customers – I differ in believing it’s forever at this point. Value always wins – productivity always wins. FCPX could give us both.
If it doesn’t, I’ll be a switcher too – but not after a week.

June 30, 2011 at 8:28 am in reply to: “Magnetic timeline” is a joke, want an option to turn it offJamie
I understand why you’re frustrated with Chris’s opinion, as it contradicts your own – but there are also a lot of posts here already from people posting for the first time, who may not in some cases (I don’t know in this case) that they actually CAN slide stuff around their timeline pretty much as they used to – just using different tools. Personally, I didn’t even notice the gap behavior when I started working – to me, once I used the position tool, I was away. It confused the hell out of me at the start though – so I can see some of these posts in that light.
That doesn’t mean I think ‘you don’t get it’ or I’m saying you’re stupid. Far from it – it’s clear the new timeline is marmite – you’ll love it or hate it. Personally I care far more about ‘how fast’ and ‘how well’ I can tell the story I have to tell. Speed is essential to me – I work in live broadcast – so I approach it from a different angle. I WANT FCPX to succeed, because it shows promise in areas that matter to me. I also see a lot of complexity in it that FOR ME makes it a potentially pro software package. I don’t know anything about your experience and usage (filling out your profile here helps people to understand where you’re coming from – and if you’re new to the game, a gifted amateur, or a grizzled pro), so it makes it harder for me to understand your own views. Actually, of late, what I see are comments like this – posts declaiming people as patronising, or claiming they’re putting down your views or experience.
Don’t be defensive – get your views across. As I’ve made clear, I don’t know enough about X yet to decide if I can go forward with it – you clearly feel you have made that choice, and I’d like to hear why. Accusations and lols don’t help me or others.
Ultimately, if you’ve already decided X is not for you, why not spend your time looking at alternatives? I can only assume you believe that the angry discourse here will change the views of Apple. I don’t. I think other people have made far more eloquent and telling criticisms of the product. Together, these will turn Apple’s head a little – lead to more info from them. But it won’t change their course. I hope, like everyone else, that 7 will go back on sale. In the meantime, I bought the last two copies my reseller had so I can continue to work for the next twelve months. I can decide later about X – my gear is never a major part of my costs, these days it pays for itself many times over. I guess we have Apple to thank for that.
I’ve been a member here since 2004 I think. In this time, it’s been a valuable resource when I’ve made critical decisions in how I’ll feed my kids (I have two boys) for the next five years. Unfortunately, at the moment I can’t do that here, and I think that’s a shame. Whether you like it or not, you are currently making this forum a less pleasant place to be. Please be respectful (even in the face of views you disagree with strongly) or please leave.
Ben

June 29, 2011 at 7:13 pm in reply to: background rendering/ transcoding – kind of a joke?Yes – not sure I’ve got to the bottom of this either. I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing yet.
One thing I have read – X renders anything in the timeline at higher nitrates (I thought I read 32 bit somewhere) so transcoding is really unneccessary from a quality perspective. But it seemed to me the render bar did not move that quickly when I thought I’d turned this off.
Sure – real time performance is great, but presumably you need to render fully to export…

Mitch – totally clear, and all agreed.
I actually found going back to work, testing and planning for FCP jobs this year most instructive. A mature, stable and complete product is what we all need. Right now I have one I like – and the edits I do what not be done any quicker or better with another tool.
I think everyone will reach a point when they know they will stick or move on from FCP. I’m nowhere near that yet.

Hi Jamie
What exactly makes you feel you have any right to level accusations like this at someone? Would you do it to David’s face?
[Jamie Franklin] “Do you work for Apple n any capacity? Do you receive a paycheck from them in any capacity? Very curious…”
Your views may be strong – and to you they may be valid. I’ve known David (an extremely polite and helpful guy) on forums for many years. He’s very far from an Apple apologist.
Discussions on this forum have reached rock bottom when anyone liking X is on Apple’s paycheck. It’s also the response of someone who has nothing rational to say – which I suspect does you a disservice. You would serve your views better by expressing them, rather than throwing around baseless accusations. And no – so you are clear – I do not work for Apple.

Aindreas,
I think we could have a few pints and talk about this – you’re a passionate guy with interesting views. Actually, it was the erstwhile Mr. Ubilos you called a ‘pompous ass’.
I don’t deny anyone the right to be angry with Apple and him for changes they did not like in software they spent years learning. I’m pretty pissed myself – my time is valuable, and mostly spare time is family time. But onwards I must go – with whatever the future tools are.
Less noise, more objectivity, and better manners benefit everyone. Maybe we should talk more about the features we’d like to see, features we don’t know how to use, or move on to another app and another forum? I think it’s possible we’ve vented enough.
Best wishes,

Mitch – I have no interest in flaming anyone, but any long term COW member can see this has got out of hand. I’ve had disagreements with many people here before – for example Walter Biscardi. We’ve always managed to have a frank and polite discussion.
I also take your point about experience. Unlike some, I’ve been working in broadcast for 15 years – I do very little else. I also have major workflow issues in X – I just think I’m more prepared to wait and see if they’re solved. Actually, Apple today promised solutions to two of mine – audio outputs, and XML support. But still the bricks keep flying.
I’m not sure what brings me back here, given the quality of some of the discourse. I think I’m afraid that X will not be given a chance to grow. Underneath the surface, I think it night be worth a chance, even if Apple used up all my goodwill. Does that make me a fanboy?

[Aindreas Gallagher] “One of the posters below there after the apple FAQ announcement, acting somewhat in – everything is fine here now, lets move on with FCPX – mode said”
That would be me. You can address me directly if you want. I understand I differ in my initial impression of FCPX to you. I also differ in my opinions of what Apple will do in the future to X. I think we can all agree on that. What does NOT HELP in any way is posting personal insults about any one. I did, as I recall, rather rudely suggest to that you ‘chill out’ in a previous response. I regret that, and I apologise – I think it’s the most restrained response I could manage at the time.
However, I’m not going to stick around in a forum where invective and rambling discourse about the nature of professional applications which add nothing to anyone’s decision of ‘should I or shouldn’t I use X’ drown out debate of those points, or where my own posts (which invariable include my view that it’s too early to judge X, and those points where I feel X is lacking) are characterised as ‘everything is fine here now’. It’s playground debating.
I’ll be in the techniques forum if anyone wants to call me a pompous ass – you can come round and do it my face as well if you like.
All the best,

Unfortunately, tempers have now run so high on this forum that anyone trying to be objective or defending X is dismissed as a fanboy, or a paid shill. It’s a shame, and does no credit to anyone. It would be easy to say that those on the other side of the debate were paid shills of AVID or Adobe. I do not – and note that no one ‘defending’ X has attempted to do so.
I’ve had enough of it now – I’ll stick to the techniques forum.
