October 18, 2011 at 1:19 pm in reply to: Deleting Unseen Buried Layers

In theory, video unseen lower down will not be accessed for renders etc – but I’m not 100% convinced that’s the case.

The easy way to solve this is to collapse the 3 video layers onto the V1 track, by first dragging V3 to V2, then V2 to V1. Maybe keep a version of the timeline uncollapsed by duplicating it.

If you want to get rid of unused media once this is done, use the media manager to create a managed project of only the angles used (ie. unclick the ‘copy media outside selection’ option).

October 18, 2011 at 1:14 pm in reply to: Migrating from Final Cut Pro 6 to which new version?

    Hi Neil

AFAIK there is no option c) – this sounds like buying a copy of Final Cut Express from somewhere, and as this was discontinued along with Final Cut Studio.

You have a couple of good options though:

    1) Try the new FCPX. It’s strange no doubt, but on a new Mac screaming fast – there’s a free 30 day demo anyway so nothing to lose anyway. If you need a video output (such as Kona or BM card) you currently cannot use it. Also, make sure your new system has plenty of RAM and decent GFX (example – it’s very quick on a top spec iMac with 16gb RAM).

    2) Buy Adobe Creative Suite for half price. Yup – it’s still going to be around $1000, but then if you make a living with it, that’s easily absorbed. As an owner of any version of FCP you get this ‘bargain’ (actually brings it down to real-world prices for many) which includes the brilliant Photoshop and After Effects packages as well.

If you go for 2) you will be editing with Premier Pro. PPro looks and feels almost exactly like FCP – it can even map FCP shortcuts automatically, so your existing keys work with it. In terms of features, it’s so similar (with some AE gui stuff thrown in) that you will be back up to speed in a few days. Works with existing Kona/BM/Matrox video cards as well.

Personally – I find PPro ok, although there’s little new stuff in there, and compared to FCPX it feels a little dated, but whatever – it’s a sensible choice for Pro work right now (FCPX won’t be there for another 12 months).

    Hope that helps.

    Marvin

As populist as the notion that the YouTube crowd don’t need ProRes, it’s a badly misinformed statement about FCPX. Footage such as H264 is ‘optimised’ in the background in X to ProRes (unless you choose not to) and the package is designed from the ground up to work with it – best performance is with it too.

Despite the shortcomings at present, this is another ‘under the hood’ reason FCPX is still Pro at heart.

  • If they admit that, they would still be open to a class action lawsuit from people like me with 2-9 licenses. I hope this is not the end of the FCP7 withdrawal issues. – this is the single biggest threat to my business at the moment. Small companies should be extended the same courtesy as volume users.

It would be simple enough to allow an additional installation of FCP7 on any system running a legal copy of X. Surely this cannot do any harm to what is otherwise zero sales – if you’ve EOL’d it, sell a few more copies of X to people needing more seats of 7, make a few bucks, and improve take up of FCPX in the kind of places where it might actually be used in 12 months. They don’t even have to support 7 to any greater extent – they said it will continue to work on Lion.

    Wishful thinking – but…

Commercial use is allowed via the app store. It’s the iTunes store that restricts it. You can put X on 5 machines, and run them on the same wifi network. I’ve certainly done this with 3 computers.

Incidentally – drag the FCPX package to an external drive and drag it back to any computer you want to use it on. This works (even on non-certified machines like my Air) and beats the hell out of downloading.

By the way Andreas, how the hell did my name get back on top of this forum? I’ve posted exactly 0.0027% the number of words you have. Did you annoy the Cow gods? I assumed it was just a post count thing….

Thanks! Might try to get through this over the weekend. Because days off are for people without businesses.

Complaining about the edit paradigm misses the point. Had the features been there, or more importantly had 7 still been there for now, we would be having an informed discussion about whether or not we liked the new interface. Some would never like it (like yourself) and move on – others (possibly like myself – I still haven’t had enough time off to make a decision) would hail it as the future and embrace it. Over time, more and more doubters would come on board as, safe in their FCP7 bubble, they learnt the ‘new way to edit’.

Cutting the old software is what caused this mess, cutting 7 without already having every feature in X. You may never like X. A lot more people will never take the time to decide if they do – and my gut feeling is that’s a shame.

July 1, 2011 at 11:16 pm in reply to: Buy FCP 7 as backup?

Apparently I read this different. Apple said 7 will continue to work under Lion. This means – and I would argue this is now a legal obligation – that any point updates of Lion that break 7 will have to result in Pro Apps updates to fix 7.

Not saying it will be as well supported – but it will happen.

Frankly, I still run 7 under Leopard. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

    Must. Not. Get. Involved.

    Oh, sod it.

The thing is – I agree with everyone here. I agree with Chris about the future. I agree with everyone else about the present. In my head, in know the damage has already been done. I don’t honestly believe Apple did not forsee ALL of this. Cancelling 7 was as clear a marker as we could ever hope to get about their views.

It’s too late now – unless Apple acts immediately to counter the offers made by Adobe and Avid, that’s it. Game over. It will be that swift, and that final. Because if they don’t act now (2 days, a week) it means they will never act. It means all of this is actually going according to plan. Genuinely – I still don’t believe that, I still read something more into Lion support of 7 than anyone else, apparently. I still think an epic U-turn is possible.

I’ve bought extra systems and 7 licenses this week. I have a mature and best-in-market solution for tapeless outside broadcast workflow locked in, and a line of clients forming for the Olympics next year – what else can I do. But I will also be looking to AVID to step up and offer the kind of open integration FCP gave me. It’s a shame it’s not there yet.

And lastly – I’m pissed because I like X. With 7 still available, it would be so much easier to love it.
