Thanks for that, Yes it is the Avid Codec. I am currently playing with the 36 version for offline editing and will replace the files with 145 for final finishing.

Yes, I have come across them but they are a lot more expensive. 139 vs 78 for Barracuda. I am simple trying to find something that is OK for DSLR footage and am on a bit of a budget.

Thanks, since then I have read people finding Seagates dying (I have a dead 1TB one myself) so was thinning the Samsung f£ may be a good (and cheaper) option.

No 1/2 and 1/4. Is the doped frame line the think one that appears when you play? Guess I need a drive of at least 100 MB/s, do Adobe provide any guidelines?

Must of done something wrong with speediest. Its actually 41/55 ish. The FW800 drives and normal internal drive seems simelar (I do have a 3TB drive that gives > 150 but 40-55 is what I tend to get with internal drives).
I am very surprised to learn you cant edit DSLR footage on a laptop without rendering, guess I should stick to FCP7/prores.
When I looked at throughput when playing it peaked about 8 for DSLR but what I am actually editing is AVCHD footage whitch seems to play at under 5. Why do you need over 4* that when editing?

OK, will have another go when I boot back to Windows. Can you please expand on what you mean by optimal performance. Ime not trying to edit RED RAW! Are you saying it is impossible to edit DSLR footage using an internal laptop drive.

Yes I am, just did a speed check. 14 Read, 10 write. got that slow (my system drive is 4X faster). What speed do I need?

OK, installed latest BM drivers. Project seems to load up and get ready to play quicker but I just did some playing and still have same issue on Windows. It playes for a bit and then wont play but everything else seems OK. Can save project and quit.
Seems to kind of work if there are no filters but after playing clip with Auto (video) Levels I had to restart.
