  • PP CS6 seems buggy on Windows and Mac, playback problems, hanging

Posted by Ben Edwards on August 6, 2012 at 2:53 pm

I really want to start using PP but I am afraid I am finding it unusable. I am using CS6, for me it seems very buggy;(.

I Have a Dual Boot PC/Mac and started with the Mac Version. I kind of works but seems to clog up. If I try playing clips with lots of filters it chokes (which is fair enough) but I then have to restart PP to get get even AVCHD stuff without filters to play smoothly after that (even on 1/4 resolution). It seems to chew up a lot of memory (its using around 2/3 of my 8GB) and does not seem to release it.

So I then tried the windows version. I can edit for 5-10 minutes and playback will not work or PP hangs (for a minute or so). When playback will not everything else works, I can save, open clips etc bit not play.

I am using a i5 3550 with a Nvida GTX 550 Ti card (I have tried both GPU acceleration and SW only on Windows).

Its a clean Windows 7 64 bit install with PP, AE and Phonoshop, firefox and VLC.

My project is 2.5MB with 20sih clips (the one I am editing is a 25 min interview).

    Any Ideas?
    Beb

Are you using a Blackmagic card by any chance?

Have it installed but haven’t installed the drivers so am not actually using it. Should I install drivers? Its a new install.

    what disk storage?

thats the common problem a lot of folks have.

    No RAID = sluggish

Thanks, are you saying not installing the drivers causes the problem. Do I just need to the the driver install or is there another step.

Ime using a FW800 drive. Seagate Deskstar, I think its 7200.

Well, since you haven’t installed the BM drivers, that is probably not your problem. But, to eliminate the chance I would either remove the card from the system or install the latest BM drivers.

All I can tell you is that I had a major memory leak issue with Blackmagic drivers 9.5.3 and 9.6.0, 9.6.1 has fixed the issue.

Also, you didn’t say, but are you using Mercury Playback hardware or software?

With the Blackmagic disc speed utility, what kind of read/write speeds are you getting on your media drive?

Where do you have your PPro media cache files? These should be on your fastest/largest drive, but NOT the same drive your operating system is on.

It sounds to me like you have a memory leak somewhere though, and the BM drivers would be the obvious culprit.

OK, installed latest BM drivers. Project seems to load up and get ready to play quicker but I just did some playing and still have same issue on Windows. It playes for a bit and then wont play but everything else seems OK. Can save project and quit.

Seems to kind of work if there are no filters but after playing clip with Auto (video) Levels I had to restart.

You do realize that just because it has a yellow bar this doesn’t mean it will play back in realtime, it only means it MAY play back in realtime. You may have to render some of those yellow bars (and red if you have them) to get smooth playback.

How much RAM is PPro using? Check out your Windows Resource Monitor while playing in PPro and let me know if your RAM usage just keeps climbing and climbing. Or, does it hit a certain level and stay there?

Wait a sec – are you using an external firewire drive for your media?? If so, THAT is a problem.

Yes I am, just did a speed check. 14 Read, 10 write. got that slow (my system drive is 4X faster). What speed do I need?
