Sorry but I did it all myself. I am an extreme experimenter and never take someone’s word for what can and can’t be done; I try it for myself.

You should download ‘Mactracker’ to determine your Macs setup. But if it is a PCIe version then you would be in the same situation and my Pcie G5 so it would be good to go.

I also have a slightly older mac that doesn’t even have PciX slots; just PCI and I tried a Decklink HD Pro PciX card in it and it worked ok for SD but would not work at all in HD so there are Mac’s and there are Mac’s….

But remember I come with no guarantees so don’t hold me to it.

Chris – just in case you may have mistaken what I said about the Mac ~5 min log on time; that is only applicable to any network mac logging into the host controller via the ip address (which in my case the host controller is an old PIII PC). If a Mac IS the controller eg the Workgroup Hub is connected USB to a Mac, the connection is instantaneous.
My problems are based on the Mac’s being slow to detect the ip address and may very well have something to do with my own network.

As far as the power supply is concerned are you worried about redundancy? There is no provision for that with this device but it does operate off a 5 volt plug pack so I suppose a nicad battery pack could be implemented!… but I have never had the need because if I had a power failure the whole lot would go down anyhow.

I too have Studio 2 on a Dual 2.0 G5 (2.5 gig RAM) and it is running fine.
In fact I have put a Decklink HD Pro PCIe card in it with a 2 drive external Sata raid connected to an internal PCIe controller and am able to capture and playback HDCAM no problems – even though the machine is under spec! The only down side is that it takes much longer to render stuff than my Octo core Mac Pro but hey! it was only designed as a capture/playback box (but now does a lot more).

As an ex PC user who dates back to the late 70’s playing with CPM I really am converted now. But back then I did own an Apple II and was a full blown Aussie hippie (never murdered anyone though…)

yes capturing SDI.
in capture window go >settings>capture settings>edit and change it from stereo to 5.1

Hey Luke – credit where credits due!

I knew about the lock feature but get too lazy sometimes to set it.

BTW. is there any reason why my Mac’s take about 5 mins to log into the hub when my PC’s are instantaneous?

Yeah I capture 4 channels no problems. in fact it captures 6 channels off a digibeta deck but 2 channels are empty. You can use CS3 to break out the individual channels as required or work directly with them in a 5.1 sequence.

Hey Chris – I have had a videohub installed for almost a year now and it is the best investment I ever made!
I have 4 edit suites and an audio suite connected to it along with 4 digibeta decks and 2 HDCAM decks. Also I have both PC’s and Mac’s as controllers which all work fabulous although the Mac’s takes longer to log onto the hub.
The built in downconverter is also great for SD monitoring of HD machines and the rs422 routing is to die for! No I am not a salesman; just telling it like it is.
Just a word of warning … be careful with your workstations because while outputting back to a deck you don’t want someone changing your input!.

ps. we recently did a major sport compile here where all the vision had a network bug (id) in the top right corner and we used the workgroup hubs built in keying framestore to overlay a new ID over the old one so we didn’t have to tie up valuable edit suite processing to add it to the timeline as we put it over all captured media – yet another bonus!)

place the matte shape below the insert vision but above the BG vision
top layer = inset vision
mid layer = matte shape
bot layer = background

select the insert vision clip and enable ‘composite mode’ to be luminance

I use Gefen digital to analog audio converters. each one takes an aes/spdif (or opt) input and outputs 2 channels of analog audio via RCA connectors.

hey Jen – I use a J3 with Blackmagic on both FCP and CS3 and it works a treat so go for it.
