I read that thread and it doesn’t discuss the exporting back out of the camera; just to the SxS card.
And the Flash XDR from Convergent Design is an SDI to memory card recorder – I want to go SxS OUT of the camera to a deck and/or live.

All my edit suites have a secondary monitor that can have the decks timecode monitoring ‘out’ displayed on it. These monitors are little 7″ LCD’s that you get for car DVD players and I get 2 for about $150 aussie dollars so it is a cheap solution.

I use a MacBookPro 2.5 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and the latest FCS 2/Leopard and have no problems at all (I also run bootcamp/Vista on it)
I use a eSATA II 300 Express Card adapter that has 2 x eSata connections with it and it works gr8 as well.
The workflow I use with the MacBookPro and the Sony Ex1 is that I plug in the Sony SxS into the express card slot and the eSata external drive into the firewire connector (they have multiple interfaces) and move all my data off the SxS into organised folders. Then I remove the SxS card and insert the eSata Express Card adapter and plug the eSata drives into that and edit away.
When I need to run totally battery I use a Lacie Rugged drive and connect via FW800 but I can also plug a 12 volt battery pack into the eSata external drive if I need to – I just like to keep the wiring spiderweb down to a minimum!
I have a big job coming up soon where I need to do location playouts into a network feed and I am tossing up between Aja ioHD or the Matrox MXO – one runs on batteries and the other doesn’t but one uses the Express card slot and the other uses the FW800 so my decision will probably be based on what I need with connectivity but both can do HD-SDI which is what I need.

I think maybe the question maybe should be
‘why did Adobe release CS4 without the 3rd party plugin capability?’
I think it was something more sinister and they had a reason that some may think was a little left of field….

I did the upgrade a few weeks ago and it is not rocket science. BUT if you get it wrong the whole camera can be placed out of action and you will have to use it as camel fodder!

What Walter meant to say was “We use this to make DigiBeta to SP beta dubs on our UVW-1800 allowing the Kona 3 to convert the SDI to Analog Component / Analog Audio” (meaning a UVW is not a Digibeta but an SP)

Hey Joe – if your business is based in Sydney, Australia then the answer to…

NO!… it is a piece of crap!… but elsewhere in the world it is a fantastic HD production worktool as the others here have endorsed.
So why is it a piece of crap in Sydney, Australia? Well its because thats where my company is and thats what I specialise in; FCP short/long form HD mastering; and there’s not enough business now let alone another player in the game. Most people here are Avid and have their share of problems but I am FCP and can’t remember the last problem I had let alone ever not making a deadline. So go for it and get that SR deck before Sony up their prices to make up for the economic meltdown!

#101 allow the ‘broadcast filter’ to always remain LAST in the stack of filters so it corrects for everything above.
#102 allow HDV codec in color (sorta FCP related)
#103 give us poorer nations a PAL vectorscope

DITTO HERE – as I said I don’t want the NLE to assume I want to ripple an entire timeline just for one speed change.
I do a lot of online mastering of projects edited by others; basically cleaning up edits, grading and prep for audio post. Sometimes I will add a little magic myself where needed and occasionally do a speed change; BUT I can not alter the duration of the whole show so it is a real dellima to me.
Another thing I have to do with these jobs is FIX other peoples speed settings. Often they will place a clip onto the timeline and cut halfway thru and apply a constant speed change to give the effect of normal speed down to a slo-mo. It is a very abrupt effect and I redo it as a speed ramp to smoothen the effect – again, I have to do a lot of keystrokes to achieve this.[Shane Ross] “But…to each his own. Premiere is a great application again…can always go back to that. Personally I like how FCP does this.”
Premiere is not as good as FCP and I know that as a fact, and yes, to each his own… but good software should allow for variations in the way it is used; not the “my way or the highway” attitude. I am looking forward to the next version of FCP as I think the NLE wars are hotting up with the latest Adobe offerings, and hope that the Apple folk play with Premiere the way I know the Adobe folk play with FCP.

Hey Jonathon – yes I agree it is one of the DUMBEST things I have seen in ANY app and I don’t care what the other guru’s say. I have been editing for over 30 years and as much as I hate Adobe Premiere at least it handles speed changes logically IMO. I really do dread having to do a speed change in FCP because of all the key strokes required and for the sake of an ‘option’ button it would be so much easier.
And for all you folk who are not familiar with the way Premiere do it (and Vegas, Edius, Avid and I think Media 100) is to MOVE the OUT POINT to the new length after speed changed IF there is room following it, OR alter the outpoint of the clip if there is another clip butted on the end of it. So for all you die hard “I chose the outpoint of my clip and no software engineer is going to change it” can just move the clip to a vacant track or a track where there is room for the speed change and then change away. THEN you can ripple your timeline accordingly.
My attitude is “I don’t want no software engineer to move ALL my timeline to satisfy one single clip speed change.
SO – maybe these software engineers can offer both to the user in a later version.Baz
