I am not familiar with Avid but have you tried a filter like chroma clipper or in FCP there is a filter called ‘desaturate highlights’.

One thing I can tell you is that if you send out a master with out of spec chroma you are going to get it back!

It has always amazed me how a ‘broadcast camera’ can still produce out of spec recordings that can get carried all the way to the point of transmission.

For a few years now we have been backing up to hard drives and place them in our ‘controlled’ tape library and never had a failure.

Recently we have invested in a few SATA docking stations and use inexpensive 3.5″ 1TB drives which really are the cheapest $ for Gb solution. The docking stations connect via USB (sloooow) AND eSATA (fast) and on really important stuff we backup to 2 separate drives.

And for those who can go back in time, can you imagine the library’s physical ‘footprint’ of what can me stored on a 1TB drive as compared to a HDV tape, beta tape, 1″ tape or even a 2″ tape! And then to the ridiculous… 2 hours of XDCAM on a Sandisk 32G stored in your wallet!!!! Try and put a 2 hour 2″ videotape in your wallet… if in fact you could lift it!?!

I use a Lacie 500g ‘Rugged’ – it is small and runs off FW800 AND doesn’t need separate power. Also works well with the Matrox MXO2 which takes up the Expresscard slot where I would have liked to use my eSata drives.

This is a typical example of software engineers that do not use their own product in a real world environment. It has always baffled me as to why one would want to export a still frame that says ‘unrendered’. Even crappy programs like Premiere at least render the necessary portions prior to creating the final output. I guess its just a case of these software engineers in a hurry to get to their Ferrari’s for the drive home.

My technique is to cut the clip at the point where I want the freeze and then set the speed of the cut portion to 0% and its done!

Hey Dave – for a time I was using a Decklink HD pro (Pcie) on a Mac Pro octocore and on a later model G5 quad core and never had the problem you are describing.
I am now running 2 G5’s and Multibridge Extreme’s and a Mac Pro with a Multibridge Eclipse and I have never had it so easy! Everything works a dream, well almost everything – the lastest FCP seems to do an aweful lot of beachballing requiring a force quit. But the same setup never had the problem with 6.0.4 so I think it is something funky with 6.0.5.
Incidently the Decklink HD pro’s have been relegated to Adobe Premiere on PC’s and its a pity the Blackmagic hardware outperforms the platform.

Hey Dave – I have multiple FCP’s all running ‘Blackmagic Multibridges’ and they really do kick ass as I suppose the Kona do.

I have a MXO2 coming as a christmas pressy for my Macbookpro and having played with one at length I can say that it is an asskicker as well although a little limited when it comes to full uncompressed HD as the only fast drives that you can connect to the MBP need the Express card slot(2 x esata in raid) and that slot already taken up by the MXO2 – so FW800 is the fastest you can use. Most work I need to do on the MBP is Xdcam EX and HDV stuff which is more than adequate. Of course connecting the MXO2 to a Mac Pro via the PCIe card you can get the full uncompressed thing happening.

This may be a similar problem (and solution)
I had an edited program from another machine (FCP 5) that was media managed and checked prior to me getting it on a portable drive.

I copied the project and media onto MY local system (FCP 6.0.5) and then disconnected the portable drive.
When I opened the copied project it asked for the media but instead of displaying the hundreds of clips that were involved it just showed one clip titled “. No not a typo, just the single character “.

So I reconnected the portable drive and opened the original (with media connected) and it opened everything fine so I saved that project to my local drive. Then I disconnected the portable drive and re-opened the just saved project and this time it DID ask for all the required media and then reconnected fine.

So I put it down to a bug in 6.0.5. In future I will check each project BEFORE I hand back the portable drive. Maybe that will work for your problem.

I have a couple of Panasonic DMR E20’s in a rack that record directly into the firewire port. They were some of the earliest recorders and cost about $1500 each and they are still far ahead of the current recorders; fantastic quality.
I also have some Samsung recorders in each of my edit suites and while they have firewire inputs they do NOT recognise anything other than a camera. Even stranger, when I connect our J30 HDcam deck via firewire to it the Samsung says “unable to record copyright material” which is a real pity so again, the E20 comes to the rescue.

The only downside to the E20 is that you cannot create a recording without that really ugly menu wheras the Samsungs (and even our E30’s and E55’s) can do a direct play function… and of course they are huge in size, but when they are rack mounted at least they are easy to find

OK Thanks I got it to work…

so for those who need to know this is what I did…

Export the FCP timeline to the required XDCAM EX format (VBR) directly to the SxS card.

Place the card back in the camera go to the setup menu and select –

OTHERS > CLIP > UPDATE > MEDIA and choose the SxS card that has the exported sequence.

Then it’s all good! It will show up in thumbnails on the camera as well as the XDCAM transfer software on the puter.

Now I am good to go to do location editing and network feed playouts!
