    off topic:

Yea I tried putting a bell on the dongle but than I was the fool carrying it most 🙂
Shooting in Asia brings a lot more people on the set and I hardly know what they are all doing there. I frequently find someone sleeping on my keyboard or browsing through my computer for software or emails.
No privacy there…..(Don’t even want to mention ‘respect’).
Since all studio’s are also extremely dusty and dirty, my MacbookPRo looks, almost black. 🙁

For set use, I build a MacBook pro 17″ (2009-2010) with HD screen, a fast Intel SSD as boot drive and an extra Datadisk of 750gb /7200RPM in the drive bay.
Works fine for looks grading/checks and offline renders.
Because the GUI is not great for mouse use, I bring my WAVE panel as much as possible.I have made a Pelican/Storm case with the MacBook Pro + adapters and cables on the bottom and the WAVE on top. (all in foam).
So the whole set is just one big case and setup in minutes.

    On a side note:
I am really looking forward to the Resolve Lite version for a weird reason:
I had several attempts on set to “borrow’ my USB dongle. Seems lots of people know it is about a thousand dollar sticking out there…

  • I’m running it on Lion for a while and had no problems. But that is on my set laptop, not on my main machine.

It’s simple, every time you press Apple-R for rendering, all settings or some settings jump back to defaults.
When you open the program for the first time it jumps back to DPX renders.
When it is the seoond render of the day, it might still keep the file format but things like rendersetting: “source” will be unchecked everytime again.
A quick rerender always needs a check and re-check of the settings.
IF you store the render settings in ‘profiles’ that can be set default, this would not happpen.

Do you have the dongle plugged straight into the machine or via a USB hub? Had some troubles with that before…

  • Well the Rocket has SDI outputs, used/needed when using RED software like REDcineX.
Lucky for us BM did a good job by only using the processing power of the card and feed the SDI out over their Decklinkcards.
The whole system works fine, it is just Apple that should change attitude…

  • Yup got that setup now, extra (SSD) in the second DVD drive bay as system drive and four time 2TB in the bays with software raid but it is not exactly perfect.
I don’t want to drag around cubix boxes because I bring my tower sometimes to the set.
For a stationary system is is still an option.

May 20, 2011 at 6:05 am in reply to: ALEXA – Transcoding

Kim, the camera can record several different formats including 4444 and 422 (div flavors)
Most people will use 4444 but this runs only standard speeds. If you need 50-60fps you have to go back to 422. THis switching can be done by take, no need for diff cards or project settings.

You might also see LogC and REC709 recordings. Another reason to transcode if people shoot LogC. to get the right REC709 in edit.

I am using Resolve to create offline files, ARRI has conversion LUTs for LogC -> REC709 on their website and a lot of information. https://www.arridigital.com
I suggest you read through this before you touch the material…..
