The only way to update the firmware is through the SD card. You can download and copy the file using either a Mac or a PC, but you have to have an SD card reader attached to your computer so that you can copy the file onto the SD card.

Hey David, can you make it out to SMPTE in Sydney in July? Should be lots of booths to present and show you how it all works.
There are plenty of identifiers in the MXF metadata. First is a “global clip ID” which is absolutely unique; second is the individual clip name and perhaps most useful is the User Clip Name, which can be set to whatever you want it to be, and which many editing applications use (EDIUS and Avid and Quantel, at least). Then there’s individual metadata for the program name, scene number, and individual take number.
Not every program takes advantage of all the metadata; EDIUS does, most don’t yet. You can use P2 Viewer or HD Log or P2 Log to set and track the metadata for every shot. And the User Clip Name will automatically increment each take for you, too.

The 500 is half the price of the 2100. And it does variable frame rates.
The chips are not the same; the 500 is 620k pixels, the 2100 is 1m pixels. The 2100 also has some features that are extraordinarily useful for new shooters, and can take the AVC-Intra option board.

The HPX500 has SD 4:3 capability.
As for downconverted, IIRC you can set the downconversion mode to either be “squeeze”, “letterbox”, or “side cut”.
“squeeze” would be the full 16:9 aspect ratio, and would require you to connect the cable to a 16:9 monitor to view it properly.
“letterbox” would map the 16:9 image onto a 4:3 frame and output a 4:3 signal, with black bars on top and bottom.
“side cut” would take the central 4:3 section of a 16:9 image and output that, sort of like pan ‘n’ scan. Still a 4:3 output, but chopping off the sides.
This is all coming from memory, I don’t have a 500 in front of me so I’m thinking this is accurate but not guaranteeing it.

DV and DVCAM are identical other than speed of the tape and whether or not they use locked audio; DVCAM is always “locked”, DV is not necessarily but some systems (like the DVX100/HVX200 and the JVC DV500) use locked audio anyways.
DVCPRO in NTSC is bitstream identical (compression and audio) to DV, but is recorded on an entirely different type of tape.
In PAL territories DVCPRO is quite different; it uses 4:1:1 color sampling and PAL DV uses 4:2:0.
On P2 there’s two differences to be aware of; first is that neither DV nor DVCPRO on P2 support the 4-channel 12-bit audio mode; if you’re recording to P2 you’re recording 16-bit 48KHz audio at all times, and you can record four channels of 16-bit 48KHz even in DV mode.
The second difference is that there are some flags inserted in the data stream that identify the data stream as DVCPRO. If you have one of the earliest DVCPRO decks, you’ll find that they’re not firewire compatible with consumer DV devices; they only recognize DVCPRO data streams. The HVX has the appropriate flags inserted in the data stream that would allow you to firewire directly to one of those decks.
But as far as recorded video and audio data on a P2 card, it only really makes a difference for PAL users; DVCPRO and DV on a US HVX200 are going to be largely identical, differing only in that flag in the timecode stream. DVCPRO and DV are very different (still comparable, but different) in PAL territories.

FAT32 actually has a file size limit of 4GB, but the FireStore only uses files up to 2GB in size.
The “P2” setting is in the FireStore menus; you can choose to record in Quicktime or P2 mode (or, if you have version 3.0 of the FS-100 firmware, you can also choose “P2 PN” or “Quicktime PN”.)

It’s a limitation of the FireStore. The FS-100 breaks all files into 2GB chunks, and 2GB of DVCPRO-HD should be about 2:18 in runtime.

Well, first of all, don’t panic because (as you’ve seen) the problem is definitely solvable, you can make awesomely beautiful downrezzes from DVCPRO-HD footage. I don’t know what the particular problem is with your footage, but I do know that it’s solvable.
Post one of your MXFs somewhere and let me download it and author a DVD image; I’ll send it back to you and you can burn it and see what the results are like and if it’s better than the results you’ve been getting.

For DVD you’d want 720×480, with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2 for high-def.
You shouldn’t need to go through Vegas to get good results, I would assume ProCoder could do it well too but I’m only vaguely familiar with that program…
