    Can anyone help me?

I’m learning how to use a Panasonic HVX200 (with FireStore) and Final Cut Pro 5.0. After transferring video from the FireStore (DVCPROHD) to a external HD (via FireWire ports on my G4 Laptop) and from there importing the video into FC Pro 5.0, I noticed that all of the files are in time chunks of 2:18:08 or less.

Basically, if the video is longer than 2:18, anything additional becomes a separate file – until 2:18 later. Then it creates an new file, and so on and so on…

Is this because of some file limitation setting on my FireStore or HVX200?

This is a problem since we shot longer than that and editing/organizing all of the pieces is becoming a nightmare.

Thanks for any bit of help!

Did you do a P2 Organize on the Firestore before you started to transfer your footage?

It’s a limitation of the FireStore. The FS-100 breaks all files into 2GB chunks, and 2GB of DVCPRO-HD should be about 2:18 in runtime.

The firestore uses FAT32 to be compatible with both Mac and PC, but FAT32 has a 2GB file size limit, so you’re stuck with it. I cannot speak for Final Cut, but in Avid I just sort the files by creation date before adding them to the timeline, then they just all seamlessly line up. Sure, I wish it didn’t do that, but I wouldn’t call it a ‘nightmare’.

    Jan and Barry,

Thanks guys for your response. Jan – I did organize the files on the Firestore before I made the transfer. Barry – thanks for the information about the file limits. Guys – Do you know of any way of getting around the 2GB file limitations? I’d like to shoot segments of about 4 – 5 minutes. Are there any other options available?

    Thanks again!

    P2 cards.

With FCP 5.1.4 it can see the clips as scanned if you shoot in the P2 mode. So they are still 2:16 clips but import will see them as whatever length you did the record.

    Rumpy the Cat and msacci,

Thanks for your input as well. Rumpy – I dig the name, it made me smile.
Since I’m such a newbie to this all, can you tell me what FAT32 is? It sounds like a rapper I once knew. (just kidding)

msacci, is the P2 setting on the camera or on the Firestore? I’m dragging files straight from the Firestore onto an external HD, using my laptop as kind of a go between, since I only have a wimpy 15GB of HD space left free.

Thanks again guys for your brain share.

FAT32 actually has a file size limit of 4GB, but the FireStore only uses files up to 2GB in size.

The “P2” setting is in the FireStore menus; you can choose to record in Quicktime or P2 mode (or, if you have version 3.0 of the FS-100 firmware, you can also choose “P2 PN” or “Quicktime PN”.)

You are headed for disaster. Imediately, go to the computer store and buy a new HDD. HD footage stacks up quickly, so go for the biggest one you can afford. Also how are you managing your backup? You need to think about that as well, a mirrored SATA Drive would work or you could take two Firewire drives and mirror them, regardless, you do not want to be working without a safety net, especially if you are doing work for hire.

    Good Luck,
