The FS-4 (in any variation) is not the right product for the HVX. It will be completely useless as far as HD goes. The FS-4Pro HD will not record HD from an HVX.
The *only* FireStore that records HD on the HVX is the FS-100. Any member of the FS-4 family will only record regular DV from the HVX.

Here’s an example: we did a several-weeks-long shoot for an infomercial for Prudential Americana real estate, and shot 600 GB of footage.
The footage was to be edited on FCP. Cards were offloaded in the field to two 300GB hard disks.
When it comes time to edit, on Windows I could just plug in the drives and edit. On FCP, we had to go out and buy two more drives, and then wait hours and hours while FCP tediously imported and converted each file over to Quicktime, which (in the process) also threw away the metadata and made the files incompatible with all Windows PCs.
With Raylight, none of that would have happened. We could have edited immediately from the existing drives, and backed up or archived overnight, whatever was the most appropriate action. But it removes a huge barrier between you being able to start working on your footage.
I’ve grown quite addicted to this workflow, and won’t/don’t use a Mac primarily because (up until now) it’s been impossible. The Mac workflow has been (IMO) just one step above a tape-based workflow. But with Raylight it fully embraces the full power of what a tapeless workflow should be.
This may not seem like such an issue with little cards, but we’re only about five months away from having 32GB cards. You’ll really start to care when every single card takes half an hour to import/convert, especially when you know that there’s really no good reason for you to have to wait that time because with Raylight you could already be editing and finishing your project.
That said… try the demo. If you don’t see how it makes a difference for you, don’t buy it, but I can say that on the PC I can’t imagine not having this capability, and now that it’s on the Mac I’m very close to buying another Mac/FCP station; something I wouldn’t have considered doing as long as there wasn’t native MXF editing.

Yes you can salvage it without renting the FireStore again (although, frankly, renting the FireStore will probably be easier than what I’m about to show you). I went through and documented the process for salvaging the files from an FS-100 directory in this article:

I know EXACTLY what you’re saying. Ironic, isn’t it, that you’re posting that statement in the “CinePorter is dead” thread? There’s just no way to know, until you have the product in your hands… I used to be a computer programmer, and I can tell you: anything and everything can happen between “promised ship date” and “actual ship date”… anything. The Red guys just got hit with that kind of thing; they had an excellent track record for hitting every date they promised but now they ran into one that they couldn’t immediately overcome and so the Red One is on an “engineering hold” until they announce a new schedule.
If Panasonic was just blindly promising 32GB cards on faith alone, I would probably be equally skeptical. But people at the P2HD Clinic in Baltimore told us that they were actually showing a working 32GB card there. I think that’s quite promising, but obviously I wouldn’t book a job that depends on it based on the promised “November” ship date. I mean, it may actually even ship to some customers in November, but until you have your own in your own hands, you can’t make commitments based on it.

Yes, they did say that, and it didn’t hit. But, as far as the overall P2 Roadmap goes they’re back on track; 16s were supposed to be out at the end of last year and 32s at the end of this year; they missed the 16 date but they’re going to hit the 32 date; they’ve said 32s will be out in November and they’ve already demonstrated a working 32GB card at a P2HD Clinic in Maryland. So the 16 was delayed some, but overall they’re looking to be on track.

Seeing as they’ve already shown a working 32GB card at the Spec-Comm P2HD clinic, I’d say that the odds are pretty good that they won’t be six months late with the 32GB coming out. They’ve already got at least one working and been demonstrated, and it’s not due to come on the market until November, so it seems a reasonably safe bet that they’ll hit their target.

The HPX500 is a 2/3″ HVX200. It has all the same menu settings, gamma controls, etc. If you like the images from the HVX200, imagine if they were cleaner, sharper, with less noise, and two stops more dynamic range. That’s what the HPX500 is.
The HPX2000 is basically the same camera as the HDX900. It’s going to look better, and not just because of some more pixels, but because it’s got more extensive image processing controls in there that allow you to dial in the picture more thoroughly, etc.
