I know it’s not a novel idea, it’s been around in many packages. There are also ways to import projects into AE through xml. But when I receive an edited project for color grading I prefer getting a rendered output than a collection of various materials in a timeline. Less ways for things to get screwn up.

It all depends on what you’re willing to spend.
At the moment the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 is the best bang for the buck, easily.

Some effects actually have a checkbox to limit their effect to a mask area. But most of them don’t.
The workaround is to duplicate the layer, mask the area you want to apply the effect on (on the top layer) and go ahead.
You could also use an adjustment layer and apply a mask to the adjustmentlayer.

I haven’t actually spent a lot of time with the puppet tool, but I don’t think you can apply it to a mask directly. You could apply it to a layer that has the rough shape you want, and then use the result as a track matte for the track matte for the ‘aura’ layer.
This way the contour is distorted, but the contents of the aura are left alone.

Either precompose all layers into another composition, and do the wipe on the precomp.
Or create a new solid on top of the layers, do your mask wipe animation on it and set blend mode to ‘stencil alpha’ or ‘silhouette alpha’.

Hi Moldyboot,
Interestingly, I got as far as “Math.atan2(y,x” before I started the thread, but adding “radiansToDegrees” got me where I need to be.
Basically what I’m trying to do is combine two trackers to track rotation without having to bake the result into keyframes as I would when using AE’s rotation tracker and applying the result to a layer…
Thanks,
Barend
