I have an effect that uses a feathered mask to block out the parts that don’t belong (it’s an aura effect so the idea is to get the effect surrounding the actor)

This is what it looks like.

However this effect was only created for still images, but that can easily be changed by applying track data to puppet tool pins placed on the mask.

So here is my question. How do I apply the puppet tool to a mask so that it “only” changes the shape of the mask without distorting the effect it’s masking?

Also if you know an easier way please don’t hesitate to add that in as well. I think I’ve heard of using motion track data as a mask, but it sounds like it would be to much work to get it to only surround the actor.

Here are two scripts that do what you want:

I don’t have the newer AE, so don’t know how to tie this into the puppet Tool. Can you just pick-whip n expression from the Pin Points to the track points?

I haven’t actually spent a lot of time with the puppet tool, but I don’t think you can apply it to a mask directly. You could apply it to a layer that has the rough shape you want, and then use the result as a track matte for the track matte for the ‘aura’ layer.

This way the contour is distorted, but the contents of the aura are left alone.

[Barend Onneweer] “You could apply it to a layer that has the rough shape you want, and then use the result as a track matte for the track matte for the ‘aura’ layer. “

That would be my suggestion as well, never underestimate the power of a good matte =)

So one way to do this is by making your matte on one layer (you could draw masks on a solid for this), apply the puppet tool to that layer, track the points you want to effect on the underlying video, apply that track data to Nulls (Left Arm, Right Arm, etc), then attach the corresponding Puppet tool pin points to those Nulls with an expression.
