Thanks, this is the missing link. Most people I know use their laptop
screen and one external, but I really miss the symmetry of two matching monitors. And because the laptop only has the firewire 800 and no eSata,
I may have to bite the bullet and buy a Mac Pro.Barbara

I am planning to purchase the same Dell monitor, except that I want to connect two of them to my MacBook Pro and not use the 17″ screen at all.
Is anyone doing this?thanks,
Barbara

May 7, 2010 at 12:16 pm in reply to: Mixing frame rates: Apple’s culpability in end user confusionOkay, so given that I have been handed 80 hours of footage, half from SD 29.97 tapes and half from
HD 23.98 P2 – even though I was promised that AT LEAST it was all shot at the same frame rate,
where do I start? I am tempted to just walk away from the project. This is especially hard as I am
coming back to FCP after a year cutting a feature-length doc on an AVID.thanks, Babs

This is the end of the story. I am recapturing in the
native HDV format.
Thanks to all. -
I have decided to redigitize all the source tapes in native HDV. I need to watch the material at sound speed anyway. I am keeping all the original media for now.
Thanks for everyone’s advice. Barbara -
Thanks, David.
This is an 60:00 to 75:00 doc, destined for PBS and BBC. There will be few effects. The plan was to output an un-color corrected, textless master from the box, take the show into an HD DaVinci suite and then on to titling and packaging. Audio
would be exported for the mixer.
I normally do a video conform – old-fashioned, I know, but since this is going in at full rez, there seems to be no point. -
If you were faced with 70 hours which had been captured using the Apple Intermediate Codec, would you make the best of it or would you re-capture to native HDV? I can re-capture, but I am trying to balance potential mine fields here.

What I have learned this morning is that using the Apple Intermediate Codec to capture HDV source material seems to be the culprit here. I understand why the assitant used the codec; but can you use it and still capture source tape time code?

A related question: when I try to find a master clip in the browser, I get the message “Master clip not present. Would you like to add master clip to the Browser”. But I have the bin open and I can see the clip. I’m trying to get my head around the master clip/affiliate clip concept. Have my clips somehow become independent clips? Not being able to match back to the master clip is a concern.
