The range extender acts as a “middle man” so its range goes both ways. How far will depend on the extender and what else nearby is reflecting or blocking the signal. When directly trying to connect the camera at about 50 feet away (indoors) the connection was iffy. I used the extender about 20 feet away from the camera (about 40 feet away from the controller) I can keep the connection working.
This is my typical layout for dance recitals: X70/AX53 center of the proscenium looking at the dancer. Extender 20 feet away, house right, hidden behind the lectern but antenna visible to both camera and controller. Controller (Android tab) with me about 40 feet away, a bit house right. Works.
Earlier when I tried unsuccessfully to control the camera from afar it was not reliable so one night I lie in bed wondering, “will it work with range extenders?” Next morning I ran to Microcenter (actually I drove, even though it is only running distance) and tried many and found out that not all of the routers list if they work as extenders and not all of them work with this setup. I have near me now these that do work: Asus RT-N10P, Asus RT-N12, Asus RT-AC53U. I have not tried the extenders without antenna because I thought if all units can actually see each other the chances are better to be connected. Besides, the black antennae on the side of the stage do not invite attention.

For anyone looking for this info: I am able to control WiFi cameras from ‘around the corner’ by using range extender function available in certain routers. Do not connect the smartphone or tablet before you connect the camera to the extender.

You can control certain aspects of the camera if you leave them on manual setting before switching to wifi control.
I am having connection problems though. If the camera is not directly in sight of the phone/tablet it does not connect. I am trying to see if I can extend the X70’s wifi signal with an extender/access point. So far no success. Couldn’t find any instructions anywhere.

  • May be I misread the original post.

  • My point was to not think that 60p will play at 50% slower speed compared to 30p, regardless of sequence settings. 30p, 60p and 60i will all play at the same speed. For instance an event that lasts for one second will play for one second, no matter 30p, 60p, 60i, 25p, 24p, 48p or 15p it’s recorded at. Will play differently only if recorded as slow motion.

  • Simplified: If you are shooting 60p that will play at the same speed as 30p on the timeline. It will not slow down. 60p records at 30 frames per second with two progressive fields per frame. 30p is only 30 progressive frames per second but both play at the same speed. 60i is 30 frames per second with each frame made up of two interlaced fields (not progressive), hence named 60i.
Now if you have a camera that you can set for 60 frames per second as SLOW MOTION, that WILL slow down to half speed in play back. That’s different from 60p 30fs.

  • Try this for up to 4 cameras:

There is also the BMD Multiview4:
    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1247828-REG/blackmagic_design_hdl_multip6g_04_multiview_4.html

The BMD is dumb compared to the Decimator. The Decimator has a lot of menu options such as resize the windows, reroute the feeds, rename etc, the BMD has just a couple. The Decimator has pages and pages of customization and it comes in a smaller package too. Both same price.

July 12, 2015 at 11:14 pm in reply to: EX-1 duplicate file names

This used to happen to me since years and it happened again today. So I decided to google and found this thread. My EX3 file names start with (custom) EX3_####_## and EX1 names with EX1_####_##. I can’t remember if it had happened in both cameras but it happens every once in a while. Apparently XDCAM browser, when copying to one final folder, appends the duplicate name with (1) and it creates a problem in sorting the files. In Premiere Pro the remedy I use is to sort the files by time and drag to the timeline. Sorting by name will mess up the order of clips.
This last job I know I did not have a battery dying on me so that suggestion is ruled out.

  • As long as the updated clip is the same name, length and in the same folder PPro will not complain. It will just create new cache automatically.

  • In CS6 you move the layer under Effect Control> Position. I guess it would be similar in CC.
