I don’t disagree with any of the comments, especially the above one. My intent for my post was to let other dumb downers like myself know that in a less than perfect configuration, the firewire option that is listed in Color will not work. This was a surprise to me, and would probably surprise others with smaller budgets. I thought users like me would want to take all this into consideration before upgrading to FCP 2.

Again, this is true. I may be mistaken, but according what Apple Support told me, that particular info was in the user manual, only.

IMHO, Jerry’s reply points out the most critical question about “exporting”.

If you (Eryk) are concerned about exporting–specifically–to DVD…I would tell you that I have had the same concern. Therefore, you may want to check out my thread: “FCP EXPORT to QT with Color Correction Pre-uncompressed” for more info. From what I gathered from the responses to my thread, if you are exporting for DVD, you would be more likely to have a better quality QT file if you change your SEQUENCE setting to either 8-bit or 10-bit uncompressed, then RENDER, then Export to QT.

With that said, I also found posts that explained that is far better to use Compressor (I thought there were problems with this app in the past) without RENDERING first because Compressor will automatically render in 8-bit uncompressed format. Then, once Compressor is finished, one should drop that file into DVDPRO to convert to MPEG-2. The biggest No-no I read was NOT to make your setting NONE (as in “no compresion at all”)

So as far as a definitive answer…uh…I’m not sure!

Thank you so much for your reply! You shed quite a bit of light on my concern. To make sure I understand, please correct me if I am wrong: When I am ready to “output” for MPEG-2 conversion, I should change the SETTINGS to either 8- or 10-bit uncompressed (then RENDER), not “NONE”.

I am opting to use MainConcept’s MAC Encoder 1.5 instead of Compressor. Theredore, am I correct to assume that once I have the QT file as described above (albeit a large file), and once I have converted it to MPEG-2…I will, indeed, have a higher-quality MPEG-2 file to place into DVDPRO4? (“Higher” meaning that it is better quality than outputting to QT with the DEFAULT DV-NTSC setting in FCP.)
