Thank you, again, rafael! I understand now. I went to the Nattress site and saw that they have the plug-ins you mentioned in the package called “Film Effects”. There are 2 plug-ins in the package called G Chroma Sharpen Interlaced and G Chroma Sharpen Progressive. They also have other package called “Nattress Advanced Plugins for Color V1.0 (not FCP6)”. That plug-in is called G Chroma Sharpen. The first package is specifically for FCP, but the second one is for “Color” (included with FCP Studio 2). Which one were you referring to?

Thank you so much! This makes sense to me. I am guessing that you are using 8b unc instead of 10b unc because of little difference and a smaller file size. As far as GOPs, would a 6 or 9 length be small enough (instead of the normal 15)?

[rafalaos] ” If you make to your DV footage a Chroma resampling (i.e. Nattress Chroma Sharpen) and CC, you do not get the same result in a DV time-line than in a 8b Unc one.

Also you can get a better MPG2 than the one of “”90 minutes” of Compressor. Just short the GOPs and set the OPEN. You will see the difference.”

This is interesting, rafael. But I want to make sure I understand. Are you saying to use Nattress Chroma Sharpen, then color correct? But I don’t understand when you say: “…you do not get the same result in a DV timeline than in a 8-bit uncompressed one.” Can you explain that again? Also…I understand about shortening the GOPs…but what do you mean when you say “set the OPEN”? Do you mean make them open GOPs instead of closed GOPs?

Thank you both so much! I truly appreciate your knowledge and willingness to help! To answer your question, I am going to DVD only (thank heavens!) It’s just that I have so much invested into this project that I need to get the best results possible. The footage was shot in good light (generally speaking, that is) and white balanced as well as possible. Focus, composition, etc. was done fairly well. Any suggestion as far as what settings to use in Compressor in FCP S2? (BTW…if you’re looking for a DVX100A to buy…BOY(!) do I have such deal for you!!!)

[Wayne Carey] “If you capture DV using the component outputs of your machine, it will still look like DV because of the compression of DV.”

Bummer! Hmmm…what if I re-capture from the camera using ProRes 422? Any benefit? Or is there another way to extract the video from the camera to avoid its 5:1 compression? Can you tell I’m desperate, here? 🙂

Yes, it does not play well with firewire.

[walter biscardi] “From page 106 of the manual:

Note: Currently, Digital Cinema Desktop previews and Apple FireWire output are not available for monitoring the output from Color.”

Yes, indeed, it states this in the manual. And you’ll find that I pointed this same fact out in my initial post. Perhaps you’ve misunderstood my reason for my original post. I am not arguing the fact that high-end users, like yourself, would never color-correct via firewire. I am only saying that, as you put it, [walter biscardi] “If Apple dumbs it down in a future release,” it would be nice to know that fact upfront. Speaking as one, I guess, who needs things dumbed down, I would have preferred to have known that before I had purchased it.
