Too many drives!
Greetings…
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice about a disk management problem that I’ve painted myself into!
I just completed editing a 2-hour project with Final Cut Pro 5 (this project took 8 months to complete). The video was shot in miniDV, SD, @24p in a 29.97 timeline. Since I had limited funds at the beginning of this project, I ended up adding more and more firewire drives as the project grew (I know, I know…bad move!) Presently I have 16 firewire drives attached to my G5.
Fortunately the systems worked fine (albeit rendering was time consuming), but I did, in fact, complete the project. And now…to my pleasant surprise, the project is all of a sudden turning into a “successful” project (Be careful what you ask for because you might get it).
I now need to do some critical color correction and involved edits. Obviously, it will be quite computer/disk intense (Especially now that I’ve got files scattered all over the 16 drives. Not good!)
So, here’s my question: I know there must be a sure-fired way to “tell” FCP that I want it to FIND all the needed Audio and Video Files and transfer them to disk drive “X”. Since I can now afford a RAID configured drive (the CalDigit S2VR HD 1.5TB). My thinking was that I could automatically dump all the needed files (a little over 2 hours worth of video/audio) of my project onto the CalDigit, then continue my work to completion. I would use RAID 0 on the CalDigit and use my disconnected 16 firewire drives as a “back up”.
Anyone out there who can help save an unorganized dummy from missing a wonderful opportunity?

This is a job for the Media Manager. You can select all your media in the browser window of your completed project then go to the Media Manager and tell it to create a new project and copy all your referenced media to your new RAID. The new project will be an exact copy of the old project and will ONLY reference the copied media on the new RAID. After this little job is done you will still have your old project that references the same media spread across your other drives. Check the new project completely to make sure everything is good to go and then do whatever you want with the old project and its associated media.

collect all the stuff you want to move in one place in FCP
(if it ls all in one sequence, that’s easy,
otherwise gather the sequences you want to move, and any extra clips / audio etc into one bin.select the bin and go to File Menu > Media Manager
chose MOVE from the 1st pull-down,
DONT delete unused
Base Media File Names on: Existing File Namesa warning:
MOVE mode will copy the relevant files to the new drive,
and delete the old ones behind itself.
in some situation, (like if you ARE deleting unused media) then this can be problematic.
MM can make mistakes about what part of teh shots are being copied, and once the original is deleted it;s too late to do anything about it.
so in some cases you are better off using COPY mode in MM, checking the results, and doing the delete manually (in FCP using the Make Offline command)
HOWEVER, as you would be moving entire files the MOVE mode would be pretty safe.if you do decide to delete the unused parts of the shots, then maybe consider COPY mode
also if you use Delete Unused, then you MUST request a new project in MM.
this will open with a copy of your sequence/s connected to the new media.either way the end result will be all the media, video and audio files, all in one new location on the RAID.
