Why do you need/want to capture 3,000 hours of footage? Knowing that will help people to make better suggestions.
If you’re working on a doc, then I would say screw the quality, just offline it as OfflineRT or the new ProRes Proxy, and worry about quality when you online.
If you’re digitizing a library, then we also need to know if it’s supposed to be cross platform. If it’s FCP only, then use ProRes SQ. If it’s cross platform, use Photo JPEG at 75% or test out the suggested IMX codec.

this has always been a problem with FCP’s 3 way CC. Here’s my workaround:
Place a copy of the clip with the alpha above itself. Apply the CC to the top clip. Set the composite mode on the top clip to “Track Matte Alpha”. That will use the alpha channel on the middle clip (which is a duplicate of the one above) regardless of what the 3 way CC is doing.
I’ve used this method to make “power windows” in FCP before there was an option to use the Colorista plugin.

If you’re finishing for TV or DVD, not for film, regular ProRes will be fine. If you’re finishing for film or a Digital Cinema Package, then you would want a 2k finish to ProRes HQ or maybe the new 4444. I expect that we’ll be testing the 4444 workflow sometime in the near future for filmout.

I have used Decklink cards to lay 720P to digiBeta. Works just fine. I’d still pay more for a Kona, though.

There is no alternative to Photoshop. Especially PS Extended.
The closest is Cinepaint, which is sometimes a bit wonky, but has a nice flip book feature and works with EXR and DPX; the next is Gimp, which is limited to 8 bit color.

You should be able to easily build wipes using animated mattes or luma mattes. The luma mattes can be found on the web- google “alpha wipes”, or build your own in Photoshop or Illustrator.

I have used both Kona and Decklink cards. Both cards deliver more or less what they advertise. Both work well and are reliable.
Buy the Kona.
Aja has better software. the control panel is easier to use and allows you to configure the card much faster and more easily. Plus, I get to decide which input or output I want to downconvert or upconvert, so it’s not a mystery only to be solved by arbitrarily connecting, disconnecting and reconnecting until I accidentally find the one that works the way I want it to.
Aja TV is worth the price difference, alone. Why should I have to open up FCP every time I want to see something play out on my broadcast monitor?
And I really shouldn’t have to look up my serial number every time I want to update my driver. If I didn’t own the card, I really wouldn’t need the driver now, would I?
And then there’s the break out box. It seems like a little thing, only 1RU high, but in reality, it really saves you a lot of time and effort when you need to connect or disconnect anything. Why should I have to crawl around under a desk to do that? There’s dustballs down there! And it doesn’t get tangled!
And the ins and outs on the Aja are labeled. Which means that I don’t need to consult the manual when I decide to rewire something.
