I know. But it’s still extra steps (OK, mouse clicks) to convert & re-wrap as opposed to dragging a bunch of files from a disk to a hard drive. But that’s really what the 2nd set of hard drives is for, isn’t it?

Shane, it looks like I may have to burn the contents folder & lastclip.txt to disk before I ‘re-wrap’ them as QT anyway, even if only for the sake of turning the card around back to the camera dept faster. For the sake of workflow, there’s certainly an argument to be made on both sides. Leaving the files in their MXF wrapper does, indeed, leave all of your options open. OTOH, if a drive (or 2) crashes, & we need to recover files from the backup, then it’s much quicker to simply copy Quicktimes & reconnect than it is to re-import & re-wrap the original MXF files. Wouldn’t it be nice if a future release of FCP could handle MXF files natively? And read all that lovely metadata with it? That would certainly be the most elegant situation.
Uli, I was surprised to find out that they still make DVD-RAM. Do they still make the drives? Unfortunately, it looks like they’re only 4.3GB per side, so they’re not the most practical or convenient to archive an 8GB card with.

Here’s what we’re planning to do on set for the upcoming feature, “Perestroika”: As each card fills up, it will be inserted into a Powerbook, the clips will be imported into FCP & saved on a FW drive, copied to a 2nd FW drive, then burned to a dual layer DVD. That gives up 1 live backup & an archival copy so that I can release the card back to the camera department.

If you want an easy, canned effect, you can buy Nattress Film Effects for $100. One of the filters is a vignetter. Otherwise, you can use the shape generator to make a white oval that’s the shape of your vignette, place it under your video, change the composite mode of your video to “Track Matte Luma”. Voila!

I’ve onlined a couple of dozen industrials in the last couple of years, most of them fairly complex edits, and I’ve had very few problems, none of them serious. The biggest problems I’ve had has been with using some older stock footage, where the TC changes in the middle of a shot! Thank you, Getty Images.

I agree! FCP, by default, will simply make a new clip, and sometimes adjust the reel number. If your TC gets reset or jumps backwards (ToD tapes that go past midnight), you know by looking at the reel number that there’s an issue with the tape & may have to cue it by hand.

Are you using Capture Now, or are you logging these clips? Capture now should be avoided for any material that has timecode. If you do want to capture whole tape rolls, simply mark an out at the end & an in at the beginning, hit F2 to name & log the clip, then click the Batch Capture button. I capture 3 hour DVCam tapes this way, & I have never seen audio synch slip from them. The only audio synch slippage I’ve ever seen has been with Cannon XL1 cameras.

I did (subtly) reccommend that they no longer use the editor who captured the media. I’m pretty sure that no lockbox was used. They didn’t even have a clapper slate (or, for that matter, an $8 dry erase board) to write scene numbers on & use for camera synch!.
