I think you would be better off investing in PP CS4. PP CS4 should make good use of the Quad Core system. You can also out put to an NTSC monitor using the graphics card’s HDMI or S-Video port. You can also loop through the camera or DV converter.

    Dylan Reeve,

A lot depends on you as the user. What are your needs. Could you use iMovie to edit your projects?

Avid, Apple’s FCP, Premiere and Edius all do about the same thing more or less but you will find yourself liking the GUI and work flow of one more than the others. I have used FCP many times non professionaly (my friends system). On the other hand I used an $80,000.00 Media Composer from 1997-2002. It was a real kick as system back then. I think FCP was still Macromedia’s Key Grip back in 1997. Avid’s were the top dog back in the 90s but as of today almost any computer and software solution will work. Choose the one that works best for your needs. I use the Adobe Master Collection my self because I do web design, print production and video editing. If I just did video editing I would opt for Edius (great software) but the integration of the Adobe products speeds up the work flow for my needs. I have nothing agaisnt FCP but if you compare Avid, FCP, Premiere and Edius you will find they all work just fine. The titler is the biggest weakness of FCP in my opinion where as Premiere has a great titler. Next would be the lack of Blu-Ray support. Will you need Blu-Ray support? All NLE software will have strengths and weakness. Avid has dedicated hardware from Avid if you can afford it. FCP is sold as a complete package known as Final Cut Studio. If you need Motion Graphics perhaps Apple’s Motion might help you decide or perhaps Adobe’s integration of Encore, PhotoShop, Premiere and After Effects might be the best work flow for you. What are your needs? You may end up buying FCP only to find out your would have been better of with Edius or the Adobe production Premium. My Final Cut pro friend has come to that conclusion. I know many PC users who have bought a Mac Pro and FCP because they hear time and time agian how great it is. The sad truth is that it is just another NLE system and it may or may not be the best solution for your needs.

As far as what jobs to take is conserned I would take a job using Avid just as easily as I would using Edius if the opportunity arrived. In the end you submit a demo real. You either have talent or you do not. The person doing the interview is not a PC vs Mac guy or Avid vs FCP guy. More often than not the interviews I go to require a sample AV script as well. You may find that you need to multi task at certain jobs.

Using a DV converter or looping through your camera will work OK but I like to use my grpahics card S-Video out. Your graphics card must be dual monitor capable. You then select it as the external device as your would a DV device.

  • Eric,

One of my friends download the PP CS4 demo on his Mac Pro. There was not as many fonts or as many transition as my full PC version. I hope it was just the demo version that lacks these features. While the titler was not as robust on the Mac trial version as on the full PC version he did admit it blew away the titling tool of FCP. He thought the trim editor and most other features we indeed much better than what FCP had to offer. You are alo right about the audio . It is easy to make any track stereo, mono or 5.1 surround sound. Sound Booth can also help kicks some ass when editing audio.

  • There is a FCP keyboard layout pre designed in PP CS3 and CS4. It may not work 100% correct by defualt.

March 23, 2009 at 11:21 pm in reply to: What graphics acceleration hardware for PPro/AE?

CS3 had an option of GPU Accleration that made use of Direct 3D hardware acceleration. It also would out put the video overlay of the program monitor out the S-Video or even the HDMI out put of the graphics card when selected. In CS4 you can still do it by selecting the monitor (S-Video port, HDMI) as an external monitor. I have less RT but the Macs did not make us of Direct 3D and the CS3 manual stated this was not an option on the Mac. With the new way the Mac can indeed out put to an NTSC monitor using just about any ATI or Nvidia graphics card. I think that is what you are talking about. The realtime looks good but it is not true realtime. It is better than the VGA preview.

I agree that Adobe owns the multimedia market. I used to use Edius and I think Edius is a great program but when you combine SoundBooth, AE, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Indesign the CS4 Master Collection realy shines. I think Adobe will continue to steal FCP customers because of this.

Are you folks using Premiere with RT hardware or software only? If you use software only you can select to out put the overlay to an external NTSC monitor. CS3 is much better than CS4 for this.

You can raise an lower the volume with the envelope filter and even select the write mode if you want to use the audio mixer. In the audio clip you will see the option to show rubber bands for pans or volume changes. You can effect the clip or the whole audio track’s volume. You can even opt to out put any audio track as a 5.1 surround sounds using the audio mixer. It is hard to explain anything in words.

Above is a link to Adobe’s tutorials. They are 100% free to view.

    1) You might want to right click and use the normalize audio option. I think you might find it is much better than raising the audio by 3db

2)You can see the audio wave forms. I think in CS4 there is a film clip and speaker icon to change it. It can be done in CS3 but I do not have it. I only had the trial version.

    3) In the effects editor you can select which effects/attributes you want copy and past.

4)It can be done. I am not at my PC right now.

5)It can be done with the tools panel. I forget which Icon.

6)I will get on my PC and let you know exaclty how to change the defualt transition. I am not sure there is a hot key to tab through them.

Why have you switched from FCP to Premiere? Just curious.

Does FCP have an anti flicker filter? Edius and Premiere can have this problem with still images but the anti flicker is the solution. It will blur the image but it is hard to notice. I can only imagine FCP has an anti flicker filter for still images but blur filter might work better than nothing?
