I would like to think your system could edit 12 layers of native HDV with out any problems. Can it?

    Joe Moya,

Did you watch my video? As you can see my mediocre 2.66 GHZ Yorfield with a mere 4 GB of RAM and a mediocre 9400 GT can play back native AVCHD, MPEG 2, DV and HDV with ease. I can mix all of these codecs on the same timeline. I can drop native AVCHD into a P2 timeline or even drop HDV clips into a P2 project timeline. Not only does it not have to convert the files but I get a lot of realtime as you can see. What more do you want from Premiere Pro? I can even put my FRAPS and CamStudio native codecs on the timeline and play them back in realtime. What codecs can you not play using Premiere Pro?

I had Avid Liquid Edition and sold it because it could not out put in RT to the Firewire port to make use of my DV converter like Premiere Pro can. Vegas can do it but I get more realtime with Premiere Pro so I sold my Sony Vegas software as well. Sony Vegas still does not support the P2 codec from Panasonic with out plugins.

I do agree FCP is converting all the files to the Apple ProRes codec.

Adobe has approved several cards for the Mercury Playback Engine with more to come. The MPE is amazing. I think the only option for FCP is the RED Rocket. I don’t think the Red Rocket accelerates anything other than the R3D codecs but I am not 100% sure. It is also very expensive.

    Joe Moya,

Your comments are 100% false. Premiere Pro can mix just about any type of codec you put on the timeline whereas FCP needs everything converted to the Apple ProRes.

It is true. You can loop through your DV camera or use a DV converter. Some DV converters will give you full deck contol with the older 3″4 inch decks and Beta decks. DV converters will also have more I/O options.

    Hey Walter,

I have to disagree with your comments 100%. Native HDV is very easy to edit and even key if you have a Quad Core system. I know everyone that uses FCP brags about the 4:4:4: color space of the Pro Res as opposed to a 4:1:1 color space of HDV. While I will admit 4:4:4: is better than 4:1:1 all PC programs can key just fine with 4:1:1 codecs so should FCP.

I can put the HDV codec in a P2 project timeline or even a custom uncompressed 1920 X 1080 timeline. The realtime is still there. My video link below should prove this.

The Mac Pro along with FCP should edit native HDV with ease. Perhaps FCP can do it but if it can why make use of the Apple Pro Res? You are just going to make a bigger video file than the native HDV video file. I have a medicore $600.00 Quad Core PC not a $2500.00 Mac Pro.

Did you mean component video out?

You need a DV converter to convert analogue to digital or a dedicated video capture card.

  • Mark Hollis,

You use Adobe Premire Pro 1.5 but do you realize Adobe added the Media Encoder several years ago to the Production Premium? It works like Apple’s Compressor.

Why would your friend with Premiere Pro CS4 use Avid News Cutter when working with legacy tapes? Are you talking about 3/4″ and Beta tapes. You do realize Adobe Premiere will wok with the AJA and Decklink cards not to mention they make DV converter for digitizing older analoge tapes.

    https://desktop.grassvalley.com/products/videoconversion.php

Some of these converters even give you full deck control. I see no need to use Avid’s News Cutter when working with legacy tapes but perhaps you could explian it to me. Perhaps there is method to the madness. I can aquire old analogue tape swith ym system. A Decklink Intensity Pro card would also work.

    mikkell khan,

Adobe CS4 should work just fine although the Production Premium would be better. The media managment should be just fine.

The Dynamic Link feature allows After Effects to read Premiere Pro porject files and Premiere can read AE project files. That is all the Dynamic Link is for.

If you network your computers together and allow the drives to be acessed by one another you should be fine.

Could you use external Fire Wire drives or hot swappable bays?

Do you have a budget to stay within?

Below is a video about hard drive storage.

If you have a company network your systems together the hard drive (storage) system will probably have swappable hard drive bays.

A Decklink or AJA card would be a better option than using a DV converter but you can not use either with the iMac. Premiere Pro can out put HD projects through the DV converter and I have heard the same is true with FCP. Your CC and speed changes should look much better on the NTSC monitor as opposed to the computer monitor.

For me the resolution at 1/4 is OK. Think of it as burning 1920 X 1080 project to Blu-Ray and DVD. The Blu-ray will have better quality but the DVD version will not be bad at all.

I agree. The graphics card HDMI out is not the best option (for CC) but niether are propietary codecs of the Matrox system.

I myself would rather use the DV converter but to each his own.

I think the Deckling card would be better option but I can not say for sure since I do not have one to test out.
