oh, forget about it… I opened software updates and clicked on more information and got a detailed PDF. Quite an update for a x.x.1 increment.

[Shane Ross] “Full XDCAM support, MPEG IMX support.”

What does this mean? Does it makes any difference for XDCAM SD or is it only for XDCAM HD (the 35mb VBR format I guess).

I whish Apple spoke a bit more in detail of the updates…

Are you swtiching your system keyboard layout while FCP is open? On my system, I loose the command key when I switch it while FCP is open. I think there is a bug there.

as odd as it may seem, applying a color correction effect on a clip above another results in both clips being affected by the color correction.

For example, if you add a 3d warp the the top layer, crop it and then add a CC, It seems that the CC doesn’t get the new “mask” created by the 3d warp and applies the CC as if it were an effect on the filler. It makes CC a bit hard when you work with picture-in-pictures.

This is on MCA and symphony… not sure about Xpress.

    what solution have you found?

did you find a way to CC a clip on top of another without having to step in?

Does the card+cable+dock setup work fine on the older system? If so, it’s really a compatibility problem with the controller card and the G5 or a driver problem.

    If not, then read on…

If it’s the same LVD Mediadock as the one I once had to troubleshoot, you might check if it’s set to the correct “mode”. There’s a 1/2 switch on each ends of the tower that switches between a two or one controller. One setting is for a single controller configuration (one cable, disks IDs set from 0 to 12 with one end terminated) the other is for dual controller (each halves of the tower is on ID 0 to 6 and terminated indepedantly).

The second config is faster and probably more stable since it has less drives on the same bus. it’s also easier to troubleshoot since you can disconnect half of the drives to see which half is causing problems.

It’s easy to get mixed up on the proper setup of those towers so go read the manual. It’s there somwhere on avid’s website.

You might also consider changing cables. LVD SCSI seems to be REALLY fragile so a cable with even a slight defect can cause problems likes you have.

If the controller is the problem but is really supposed to work on G5s, you might try to change the PCI slot it’s in.

September 4, 2006 at 8:07 am in reply to: fcp complete compared to Nitris, paint module?

[Adolfo Rozenfeld] “Saying that Combustion is better overall than After Effects is as arbitrary as saying the opposite.”

I was talking about the paint abilities only. AE’s paint and clone tools are MUCH less complete than what combustion has to offer. But then AE is much better in alot of other areas like motion graphics and it is also more stable and faster.

This wasn’t meant to be a AE vs combustion discussion 😉

[paul] “now if this set up is 25 k compared to 100 + plus for HD nitris, I dont mind an occasional drawback!”

If you’re comparing to symphony nitris, maybe… but DS nitris will still be much more efficient than a full blown FCP setup in many aspects.

Combustion has a better paint module than AE. If you’re doing lots and lots of roto, tracking and paint, combustion will probably serve you better.

If you want to stay inside FCP and want a tool to fix problematic shots (as opposed to complex graphic effects and compositing), then take a look at the Silouhette Roto plugin. It’s cheap, has outstanding paint, roto and tracker modules. The downside is that it loads its own interface, so it’s more limited for complex effects and compositing because you can’t use third party plugins inside of it.

Go to https://www.silhouettefx.com/index2.htm. They have a demo version… you’ll be amazed.

August 31, 2006 at 3:00 pm in reply to: A new day, a new tape format

Just a few days ago I tried to play a Sony HDV tape in a Canon XLH1 camera and it didn’t work. I tried to find information on the net about compatibility between the different brand and could not find a word on it.

This is a pretty big problem… it seems normal to me to expect a Sony 1080@60i HDV tape to play in a Canon XLH1 and vice versa. I’m not talking about 24p or cineframe modes, just the bare 1080@60i mode. Working with HDV, it’s always pain…
