    1. I am trying to install an AVID 8 bay LVD dual SCSI system on a Mac G5. With the LVD turned off the G5 starts perfectly. Starting with the LVD system turned on – I get an immediate crash telling me to restart.

Any ideas on how to get the drives up and running so I can see them on my system.

    2. I have 80 gig drives in the bays. Without paying AVIDs prices, can I replace the drives with other larger SCSI drives?

    Really appreacite the help.

    Wendell

G5, 2.5g AVID SCSI controller. NOT running the AVID on this machine. Just want to use the drives for FCP.

How was the array formatted? for Mac? I’d think you can replace the drives without any problem…

Thanks Jerry for the quick reply.

This raid was formatted for MAC 9 in to two banks. Had been working perfectly on my G4. I’ve now gone to FCP5 fulltime and would love to have the dual SCSI performance.

    Thanks

    “AVID SCSI controller”

Just a guess but that might be the problem, maybe update the drivers for the controller card to work on a G5, or replace card with an adaptec card

I’d reformat it using Apple’s Drive Utility even if you can get it to mount, and also check into the host adapter you’re using… has to be compatible with your G5… could be it needs replacing. ATTO is the ONLY way to go here IMHO…

It was originally formatted with software from Avid?

I believe it is the controller card – shows up under the About this Mac. But can’t find any drivers to support OS X. It is an Adaptec card model ADPT. 39160.

What ATTO card might you suggest. Hate to thow away a heft hardy RAID system. Hoping to put in 200 or more gig drives in each bay if I can get it running.

By the way they don’t show up at all in Disk Utility to be able to reformat.

    Thanks

It seems the last driver for the 39160 is a 1.3beta1 dated 8 Jan 2004. Here’s it’s location:

    https://www.adaptec.com/en-US/downloads/macos/macos_x?productId=APD-39160&dn=PowerDomain+39160

If that doesn’t work, I think the ATTO UL4D should substitute.

Thanks guys. I can get a single SCSI drive to work but not the AVID Raid…. bumbed out. Now that I’m retired only do work for non-profits I don’t the 3-4k to buy new raids… My goal had been to upgade the drives in the AVID LVD dock… but alas.

Appreacite all your ideas and work trying to get the correct driver.

Check for SCSI ID numbers and make sure they are all different, don’t forget to include the SCSI card’s ID. Also make sure your SCSI chain is terminated.
