It’s also worth taking time to create Templates for your Render settings and Output modules. When you make a template it will appear in the selection drop down menu, making it easy to apply it to multiple items in the Render Queue. You can also choose it as a default render setting so that you don’t need to change it every time.
In terms of Output modules, many people don’t realise that you can add multiple Output modules to a single render que item. This means you can render a movie once, then format it for several different outputs, avoiding re-rendering it every time. Saves tons of time.
To do this, select the item in the Render Queue and choose Composition > Add Output Module. Adjust the settings as required.
BTW, you can move Templates to other machines, very handy if you are a freelancer like me, working on different jobs and different systems.

[Johnny Cuevas] Just recently discovered that little gotcha a few months ago when I attempting to do what Paul is trying to do…sync after things are started.
After Effects…live and learn the hard way! 🙂Yup, it’s a constant and sometimes frustrating learning curve! I come across little gotchas and niggles in AE virtually every day – keeps me interested though – with it’s little quirky ways! 🙂

Hi there,
If you add Comp markers, as opposed to Layer Markers, they will show up when the comp is nested within a new comp as layer markers.
To do this, in your nested comps add Comp Markers by hitting Shift-1, Shift-2, Shift-3 etc, double-click to rename if necessary.
Then, when you nest this into a new comp, the markers will appear as layer markers in exactly the same places.
Sadly this needs to be done before nesting as adding subsequent markers in the pre comp will not update in the main one.

Hi there,
The file may have been corrupted so try opening it in PS and resaving it as a copy.
If this doesn’t work, check that you don’t have the “Import as Sequence” option ticked in the AE Import dialog box. That can screw things up and it’s not obvious to spot. Has caught me out a few times! 😉

Hi Joey,
You can do this, here’s how;
1. Create a comp containing all of your images
2. Drag this comp (nest it) into the comp where you have your sound keys effect working
3. Apply Time Remapping to the nested comp
4. Create an expression to link the Sound keys required output to the Time Remapping value
5. you can use the Linear expression to fine tune the ranges used during the conversion of sound keys values to TR values.You might find this tutorial useful where I use a similar technique with the “Convert Audio to Keyframes” assistant.

Hi there,
This effect can be achieved with the “Shatter” effect on a grunge-textured layer and some good old-fashioned keyframing. You can check out my “Handling Particles in After Effects” tutorial for some tips on how to create your own Shatter map in Photoshop to customise the shapes that the layer breaks into. Use the Physics, Viscosity and Forces sliders to control the particles created.

Hi there,
What you can do is go into Macintosh HD > Applications > Adobe After Effects CS5.5 > Presets. Make a new folder in there named “My Favorites” and then create subfolders within this if you need to. Create copies of the presets that you want in there by Option-dragging them from the original folders. You can also save your own custom presets into here from within After Effects by going to Animation menu > Save Animation Preset. Please note that you can’t preview any of your custom presets in Bridge but you’ll be ale to see your new folder structure and the presets contained next time you restart AE.

Hi there,
You have to be a little bit careful with the Puppet tool. The Puppet tool adds a mesh to the Alpha channel of the layer and fixes that mesh on top of the image. Therefore, if the image’s alpha changes shape (via animation or effects) then the mesh will no longer match the image.
Your solution would be to animate your character using the Puppet tool then precompose this character into a new comp. Make the new comp 3D and then do your thang with it as required. Don’t collapse Transformations and don’t collect $200 dollars when you pass go! 😉
Also, if you want to make the characters eyes blink or do any other preliminary animation on the character before using the puppet tool, these must be done in a nested comp and they must not affect the Alpha “shape” of the layer.
