There’s a big section in Illustrator Help that explains this. It depends on the type of work you’re doing.

Here’s an exceprt.
“You can use the Clipboard to transfer selections between an Illustrator file and other Adobe software including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. The Clipboard is particularly useful for importing paths because paths are copied to the Clipboard as PostScript language descriptions. Artwork copied to the Clipboard is pasted in PICT format in most applications. However, some applications take the PDF version (such as InDesign) or the AICB version. PDF preserves transparency; AICB lets you specify whether you want to preserve the overall appearance of the selection or copy the selection as a set of paths (which can be useful in Photoshop [or After Effects]).
To specify copying preferences, choose Edit > Preferences > File Handling & Clipboard (Windows) or Illustrator > Preferences > File Handling & Clipboard (Mac OS). Select PDF, AICB, or both. If you select AICB, select Preserve Paths to discard any transparency in the copied artwork or Preserve Appearance And Overprints to flatten any transparency, maintain the copied artwork’s appearance, and preserve overprinted objects.”

To copy and paste a mask from Illustrator to After Effects there are a couple of things you need to do;
1) In Illustrator. Go to Preferences > File Handling and Clipboard
2) Make sure the Preserve Paths option is selected
3) Select the Path and copy it
4) In AE, create a solid (Cmd/ Ctrl – Y) the size of your comp
5) With it selected, go to Edit > Paste. The mask should be visible now on your layer. (If not, make sure the Mask Display toggle is on in the Comp panel)
6) If you need to adjust it, Hit Command (ctrl) – T to Free Transform it.
7) Apply the Stroke effect, make sure to select the All Masks option.

No worries Danielle, it’s always hard to communicate by forums and email and you didn’t come across badly. I just wanted to make sure that John knew we appreciated him! 🙂
I’ll post a tutorial a bit later today with another technique that you can use. Give me two or three hours then I’ll post it for you.

John has provided a great project, very nicely done. Very kind of him to take the time to do it. Big thanks john from everyone on the list, much appreciated.
Danielle, I’m not sure if you know about it already but the After Effects basics forum is specifically for people who are still learning After Effects and need more instruction. So if you feel that you need more “step-by-step” instruction it may be best to look there for answers to this.
Let me see what I can come up with and I’ll post something on that forum later today. Watch this space!

As Michael says, AE is probably not the tool of choice for this. But, You may be better to use a particle system. Particular is great but if you don’t need 3D Particle Playground is pretty good as you can create a custom particle, use masks to contain them and add bouncing behaviors and have a lot of control over gravity.
Loads of tutorials online that will get you up to speed with the controls. Use Turbulent noise and caustics to create a watery particle, it can even be an animated particle.
