Liquid coming out of a tap with pressure!
Hello everybody
I’m in a bit of a pickle, a client has given me some RUBBISH assets – a really poor greenscreen shot of a tap pouring out redwine into a glass. Because the shot is so shoddy (ridiculous amounts of spill) its basically unusable so I’m keeping the only thing I can use (a wooden tap) and getting rid of the rest.
As I’m really pushed for time (they want it the day after tomorrow!!) I was hoping any of you chaps may be able to help point me in the right direction when it comes to using Mr Mercury and using it to create a moderatly pressurised jet of water (as if from a tap).
Anybody have any preset settings which can do the job?
It may appear that I’m being lazy and normally I wouldn’t ask but I’m stressing out here! Time is NOT on my side!
Its disappointing but (not naming any names) the production company who prepared the shots I’m dealing with are a big international firm and you’d have thought they’d know what they’re doing!
I love my job but today its making my hair turn grey.

Does this liquid need to interact with anything once it comes out? Like, is it going into a glass? Because you’re not going to get a good version of that with After Effects.
If you just need it pouring out, there are a few tutorials out there that are just a Google away.You also might consider getting some stock footage from Artbeats or any of the dozens of stock footage sites out there.

Thanks for the heads up mate, unlucky for me the budget won’t allow stock footage!
It was literally just liquid pouring out of a tap that I needed, I did away with the glass as another shot later in the sequence reveals that so I didn’t have to be too literal as to where the liquid was going.
I managed to get an alright-ish result using Mercury by speeding up the footage afterwards so it looked less gloopy and more pressurised. It kind of works….kinda…

You might try some directional blurring on your pouring water too. 🙂

As Michael says, AE is probably not the tool of choice for this. But, You may be better to use a particle system. Particular is great but if you don’t need 3D Particle Playground is pretty good as you can create a custom particle, use masks to contain them and add bouncing behaviors and have a lot of control over gravity.
Loads of tutorials online that will get you up to speed with the controls. Use Turbulent noise and caustics to create a watery particle, it can even be an animated particle.
