    1) No, not really. If you want speed, I suggest a Red Rock Shoulder mount. The 5D will need babying for focus, while the 7D (sensor more like academy 35) is a bit more tame.

Can you crank it up to 3200+? I wouldn’t. Clean stops are in intervals of 160, so 160, 320, 640, 1200 are cleaner than their surrounding ISOs. 1200 is as far as I would push it in a non emergency setting.

    2) L lenses or primes are preferred. If not then I would test the f4. I’ve noticed many non-L lenses have a delay in adjusting their iris so as you zoom you’ll notice sudden shifts in exposure.

    3) We use the Zoom h4n with Sennheiser lav mics and a few different shotguns. You can split the headphone signal with a quality splitter and feed it into the camera. You can set the camera on auto-gain and most situations will work. We also use a plugin called Plural Eyes to speed syncing in post… runs about $150.

    4) Rebel T2i is a NO. It isn’t constructed in a sturdy enough manner that I would trust it with all lenses in all situations (I feel like the lens mount would break). Canon 7d I prefer for the extra DOF. If you’re working all day every day and ergonomics are important, then yes a real camera is far more worth it.

Final Cut Pro should preserve it under certain circumstances and I believe Sony Vegas released the feature last year too. I’m not certain about Neilsen watermarks though.

It’s easy, for the most part.

Premiere Pro/Adobe Media Encoder, use the MPEG-2>1080i 29.97 fps preset and change the following on the video tab:

    -Field Order: Change to lower
-Under GOP Settings, change every setting to read 1. This will create an I-Frame only, closed GOP.
-Not sure what 24Mbit refers to. You may need to check back to see if they want a Constant Bitrate file, or if 24Mbit is the maximum stream size including audio. You would change this in the bitrate section regardless.
-They didn’t give you audio specs, or at least you didn’t post them.

For your knowledge, the preset multiplexes into a “standard” mpg file, this is a Program Stream.

Preset is Main Profile/High Level, this is 4:2:0. There is a special profile setting for 4:2:2

  • I’m not certain, but I can only assume it’s stripped out. PPro CS6 has promised closed captioning creation and support so that’s what I’m basing my assumption on, but now I’m curious too.

March 8, 2011 at 10:29 pm in reply to: Sony bloggie footage

What do you need to convert it for? Editing or posting online?

  • What portions are you and arent you sharing? Premiere Pro CS5 isn’t designed for a shared environment… I would think it’s 2 versions away.

What that said, here is what I would store on a shared drive:

    – The Footage and other assets (At this point I’m assuming a RAID10)
    – Go to Edit > Preferences > Media. Click “Save Media Cache Near Originals”. Premiere writes an XMP “fingerprint” on footage to match its cache files. If you conform on one system, you may be able to skip the initial conform on other systems.. even though conforming is relatively fast.

I would not plan on saving project files on the shared drive as Premiere can’t do merged saves or versioning.

March 8, 2011 at 10:01 am in reply to: Career question for the very experienced among us

Kate, the others have touched on some good points. Although I’m primarily a cinematographer, I’m also an editor and co-own a production company.

My advice: have a goal and focus your energy towards it. Any other lowball jobs are sustenance and shouldn’t stray you from the path for too long. Think about getting a full time job – there are only so many hours in a day, think of how it affects your ability to concentrate on your own production company.

Mark mentioned networking vs “networking”. If you can clearly see that taking a freebie job or a lowball will advance your career from credit or contact, take it. Be smart about it and don’t let bad deals sap your energy. I’ve been quite lucky that doing freebies and building my “favor bank” has paid off in spades. I’m 25 now and sure my name doesn’t get top billing but I’ve co-produced stuff for major car companies and I’m pitching tv shows.

I see two extreme things that hinder success as a production company (assuming you have fairly decent business and people skills). First is the amount of people who don’t take the jump to develop anything beyond an idea. That initial push will get you through a project. Second is people who are anti-commercialism. Entertainment is a product… your audience is your buyer. Don’t be afraid to shoot stuff purely to make money or to do things like product placement, or alternate means of funding.

March 8, 2011 at 9:18 am in reply to: NEW to CS5 PP from FCP questions

If you want to get heavy into Premiere, I suggest investing in an approved Nvidia card as using hardware acceleration is where PPro shines. If you have Yellow render indicators, it still might be worth prerendering in the timeline by going to Sequence > Render Entire Work Area.

Alternately, under the program monitor (the monitor that controls timeline playback) there will be an icon of three circles, click this and change your playback resolution to 1/2 (the other choices will be grayed out, they’re really meant more for 2k and 4k footage, don’t freak out).

Watching these videos will give you some “ohhhhhhhhhh, that’s how I…” moments.

March 8, 2011 at 9:13 am in reply to: Premier vs. Sony Vegas

Although I’ve not used Sony Vegas much, let me stick to what I believe helps me as person who uses Premiere Pro to earn a living:

-The Mercury playback engine in Premiere is phenomenal. The right Nvidia graphics card will allow GPU acceleration for native codec playback and rendering to some codecs (looks like those in the MPEG family thanks to MainConcepts). Saves time prerendering, if prerender is needed at all.

-The round trip integration with other Adobe products is a time saver. I can bring Photoshop files into anything, bring a Premiere timeline into After Effects for titles, effects, and color grading, bring Audio into Audition or Soundbooth for doctoring, then take the After Effects file and bring it into Encore and burn a proofing DVD for a client. May not be important for you (Vegas looks like it has some nice audio tools) but it is for me.

These are the two “deal sealers” that save me the most time in comparison to using any other NLE.

You may want to check out https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/switch/?sdid=IFEAF as I think the page names a few things that are unique to Premiere, although marketing language pits is against FCP in the examples.
