Another point of view is that many production houses have not lowered their prices. A young person living at home with a $300.00 a month lease on a FCP set up and camera can do a job for a lot less. Now we always have the skill and talent level to contend with. That’s a different issue. Having said that I have seen some work from college students that blow mucho expensive production house out of the water.
Perhaps some of companies have not adjusted to the new reality.

Great piece, but I often wonder ( no offense) if we are touting the wonders of video why communicate in print. To quote a famous Canadian “The media is the message”

Nick I agree. It used to be Powerpoint now it’s Video as the world turns.
I’ve run into this before and have killed it quite easily. I suggest they buy a Macbook because everyone knows that what Macs are for ( wink) and use IMovie as it’s simple and they can then assess their employees who are best suited to this kind of work. Also they don’t have to tie a lot of money up. If they want to go nuts buy a prosumer camcorder. I charge for consulting and a day of instruction. The caveat to the client is that this really should be left to professionals ( show him your best work)
When there boss finds out that there video look like cow poo, it’s the in house talent not the consultant . That same consultant also saved him thousands of depression dollars…
A nice touch is to find out how long the no talent employee spent $$$$ on the project.
May the force be with you 🙂

Great thread . Bill I’m getting the impression that you don’t like Par Cans 🙂
Whereas everything that has been said is true true and truer. I think that one can get away with a fair bit in this rock and roll scenario. The atmosphere and the style can play a large part in the end result of the video. I have over exposed videos , made them into black and white, over saturated the colors etc . All of the preceding negates some of the limitations of budget constrained lighting. At the end of the day it’s the style and editing of the video that will get you more work. I have a saying ” If you can’t hide it feature it”
Those par cans harsh lighting can bring a edge to to an image that is visually appealing , depending on the music.Sorry Bill but my biggest enemy on these smaller shoots is a lighting guy ( a band members brother in law) who has no idea what he is doing and plays the light-board like a drunken sailor. At that point all bets are off:)

Well in essence you will need a video switcher, preview monitors, and lines to the switcher from the cameras, and then out to the projector. The technicalities get a bit more complex .
What method do you intend to come out of the camera SDI?
Are you going to use CCU’s?
What signal type are you going to send to the projectors?
How much money do you have in the budget? The most obvious route is to go to a local staging company and give them your budget and expectations and learn from them.

Thanks Flo . Media 100 ( Matt) has already set the wheels in motion . It would be remiss of me not to mention the excellent service and support that both Wick and Matt have given me . It’s this kind of support that keeps me a loyal Media 100 user.

What do you mean by third party ram ? That not supplied with by Apple ? Yes I do but the board has been running okay for sometime with the non Apple ram.
No other cards .
I’m in slot three, with it set as per AJA, checked that using the utility.
Good about the pram I will try that .
The board has always been in this computer . We don’t have another Mac pro to test it in .I don’t know if this is a symptom or just some weird coincidence, but before the crash I could only get output in HD component . The SD component was not working properly nor was the composite (it was B&W) . I was going to get around to having a look when this morning the problems started.
I did curse at it the other day , do you think I hurt it’s feelings 🙂
