The i7s have Quick Sync but the new Xeons have AVX-512. The Canon Lake CPU are supposed to get the AVX-512 instruction set. Having said that the consumer CPUs often offer a better bang for the buck. There is no doubt in my mind the system below will hold it’s own against an entry level iMac Pro.

[Tom Sefton] “I’m still really intrigued to know what money you need to spend elsewhere to get real-time playback on full quality 5K Red raw footage with a single colour correction layer. And playback on a 5K monitor.”
The system below has a 10 Core CPU, 32 GB of RAM and GTX 1080 Ti. Keep in mind the system below can have more RAM added as well as a Volta GPU. I don’t doubt this system will keep up with an $8,000.00 iMac Pro minus the the 5K monitor.

Why make 5K the standard? Why not 8K? Why not have a 21:9 ultra-wide option? I don’t doubt an $8500.00 PC could play back 8K at full resolution. Perhaps the $8500.00 iMac Pro can as well.

I am not saying the iMac Pro isn’t any good or that it will not work well with FCPX. I am saying there are some powerful PC that can easily hold there own against the iMac Pro. Having said that why didn’t the iMacs offer 8 & 10 core CPUs 5 years ago? If anyone cliams it is because the Mac Pro offered 8 & 10 core CPUs you would have to ask yourself is there really a Mac Pro coming in 2018? If an up-gradable Mac Pro is coming in 2018 is that the justification to make the iMac Pro a closed system? Why can’t all the Apple computers be up-gradable?

December 14, 2017 at 11:11 pm in reply to: New Workstation for blazing fast performanceThe systems listed above sound good if you can afford it. For other people an off the shelf system might work OK.

The systems below have10 Core CPU as opposed to the base price 8 Core iMac Pro. One has a GTX 1080 and the other the GTX 1080 Ti. I would prefer a 21:9 aspect ratio for the monitor for Premiere Pro but some programs work better with the 16:9 aspect ratio. The iMac Pro looks like a beast until you check out the Windows 10 PCs.

The legacy titling system would be your best bet. I might be able to do a tutorial but for now you can watch the video below. It might be wise to skip to 11 minutes in.

Are you saying if Affinity announces their software can get extra features using the Surface Studio along with the Surface Dial then can be achieved using an iMac it would be inappropriate to post about it here?
[Andrew Kimery] “If you want to discuss how hardware performs outside of the context of editing and/or video/film post production then this forum probably isn’t the best place to do it.”
If Affinity announced their software can get extra features using Apple hardware such as the MacBook Pro’s touch bar would it be inappropriate to post about it here?

[Glenn Grant] “I think you might find the discussion you are looking for in the Illustrator or Photoshop forum.”
The link below was posted in this forum.

[Glenn Grant] ” In a FCP forum every thread is going to be discussed from the editors perspective.”
This is not the FCP forum. This is the FCPX or not debate forum where we discuss many different things. I have left a link below to the FCPX forum.

[Lauren Kaiser] “Thank you both very much! I’ll definitely look into to using something other than a color matte so I can get some texture or gradient.”
You could create a logo and tile the background with it or better yet create some motion graphics or mattes. Premiere Pro has an awesome titling system (legacy titling system).
You might want to start watching at 9:00 into the video.

[Richard Martz] “As far as I know, DVD and BR discs are no longer supported by Adobe or Apple.”
I think you can still download Premiere Pro 6. Encore comes along for the ride and works with Premiere Pro CC.

[Gerwin de keijzer] “So, my question. Upscale our SD material to HD and edit? or downscale the HD content and create a SD sequence in PPro.”
It is personal choice. Is there more SD or HD content? Can you create two movies/videos? One SD and the other HD? You don’t have to enlarge SD to fit the full screen of HD. You might be able to place motion graphics in the background to create a boarder and leave the SD scaled at 100% or upscale to 120% to 150% if needed. It will be very very important for you to see you composition on a broadcast monitor as opposed to the computer screen if you plan on outputting to DVD or BD. You also might be able to get away with placing two SD video clips side by side to help fill up the HD screen. There are a lot of options. It sounds like there might be some trial and error involved.
[Gerwin de keijzer] “Our audience more and more want DVD or BR. For BR we need higher quality. Can we achieve higher output using our SD and good upscaling?”
In that case I highly suggest you purchase an Intensity Shuttle by Blackmagic Design because you really need to see the composition on broadcast compliant hardware as opposed to your computer screen. It will be money well spent as demonstrated in the video below.
