[mark cookman] “still cant see how it fits into a collaborative workflow; editors and fx artists need to share media.”

Not sure I understand. FCPX shares nearly as well as FCP 7 does.

You can already share media in FCPX for multiple editors.

FX artists work in a variety of tools and you send media to them like you do with FCP7. You create selects and export video for them. Some graphics can now be built as effects, titles and transitions directly in Motion and then applied as needed in FCPX.

Automatic Duck’s Pro Export plug-in allows for OMF/AAF export for pro tools, or you can send stems directly from FCPX.

What are you having trouble seeing?

AJA already has drivers up for their Kona products. I don’t know about BM because I don’t own a BM card, but heard they were going to be up later today.

Broadcast monitoring requires Lion, that much seems clear though. As soon as I update my Kona machine to Lion, I’ll know more.

[Craig Seeman] “Intelligent Design, God creating the world and life all at once.
Intelligent Assistance, the Philip Hodgetts company.”

LOL. Ooops. Perhaps a little Freudian slip on my part. Surely opening FCP 7 projects in X is ipso facto confirmation of the existence of God.

Place your footage in a project, Export project. In the export preset dropdown, choose Audio Roles Only as Separate Files, if just exporting audio. If exporting everything, you can use the Roles as Separate Files for video and audio.

According to Larry Jordan on his blog. There are shortcut keys for that as well. CTRL+T for a fullscreen title, and SHIFT+CTRL+T for a basic lower third. Very cool little detail.

  • What were you trying to do? Move a project or just create optimized or proxy media?

If the latter, just select all your files in the event and right-click and choose Transcode media. If the file has already been transcoded, it won’t transcode twice, but you can start up for the remainder.

January 31, 2012 at 6:34 pm in reply to: FCP7 to FCPX XML Translation from Philip Hodgetts

[Gary Huff] “I never said it would be easy, but it’s certainly not impossible. And there may be mistakes, but that’s going to happen whenever you move a project from one NLE to another.”

The key in your statement is “that’s going to happen whenever you move a project from one NLE to another.” FCPX is a new NLE despite its name, but BECAUSE of its name, there would always be the expectation that projects from one should come over completely, without errors.

Imagine opening an FCP 6 project into FCP 7. You get the dialogue box and click update. It does it’s thing and when it’s finished, you aren’t worried about whether the color correction came over. You KNOW it did. The project works and looks exactly as it did in 6.

But import an FCP project into Avid, and you may expect there to be some things that don’t translate.

I wonder if maybe it WAS impossible when they made that statement. After all, FCPXML wasn’t released, and that was the foundation that was going to be necessary to ensure backward compatibility. Once there was enough XML code, the fine people at Intelligent Design were able to fill a market gap. Good for them. I hope they make a ton of money off it.

[Andrew Richards] “You just need the new drivers for your LHi. Thunderbolt is not required, but Lion 10.7.2 is.”

Thanks. The marketing documentation is more than a little confusing. But once I got to the drivers page of my card on AJAs website, it made more sense.

Can you explain your setup? I have a Kona lhi, but it’s in a mac tower which means it’s not a thunderbolt mac since there aren’t any thunderbolt towers. According to what I’ve read on the Apple and AJA websites, I need a thunderbolt mac AND a Kona XT to get video out.
