That’s it? My list grows every time I edit with FCPX.
My new biggest wish is for UI snapshots or workspaces. When I do color work, I want to bring up the color board and the scopes. But I hate how the viewer gets so small so I turn off my Library List and shorten the browser (cuz I’m primarily working the timeline at that time). All this so I can rearrange the viewer, scopes, timeline, and inspector for the optimal look when coloring. But then if I do something else and come back, I have to rearrange all those windows all over again. Just give me the ability to open/close/rearrange windows and then save that as a look which I can reach with a shortcut.
Multiple clip range select tool.
Dynamic feedback when using keyboard shortcut trims.
That’s just for starters.

March 7, 2016 at 6:22 am in reply to: Adding a NEW additional title to an existing scrolling textWell, without seeing the credits, I can only suggest two things. First, You can make minute adjustments to the velocity by holding down the OPT key while dragging in the value. Or you can type in decimals if you like to try and get it exact. Perhaps you’ve already done that, but that’s one thing.
The other thing to try depends on how the credits look. I did a similar thing once when they needed me to add someone’s name to the credits after they’d been rendered out and flattened. To hide the edit, I replaced/rebuilt the credits for an entire section (ie: animatiors, visual effects, sound department, etc.). It was a lot easier to hide any slight deviation in the animation of an entire section than it was to hide a single name in a block of other text.

March 6, 2016 at 10:41 pm in reply to: Adding a NEW additional title to an existing scrolling textBy finished you mean that the end credit crawl is a rendered QT movie as opposed to a motion project? If you’re dealing with a QT movie, the thing I’d suggest is to use the Throw behavior on your new text. Mark a play range at the point in the credits where your “gap” is. Place your text on top of another credit so you can reliably track the speed it travels. Then adjust the speed of the throw in the behaviors tab until you have it moving at the exact speed as the rest of the credits. Then reposition the text off screen (you may need a little trial and error here too) so it rolls into view like the rest of the credits.
The cool thing about the throw behavior is when you have the velocity set, you can move the text anywhere and it’ll still move at the same speed.
There’s not a super-easy fix. This takes a little trial and error, but it’s much faster than trying to get a match move out of Motion. You can zero in on the speed in probably 5 minutes or so.

The file is 8-bit and RGB. I made the 1080 psd with the same version of Photoshop as the 5k psd (CS4). I uploaded the file itself. I just know it’s going to be some user error on my part, but if anyone has a moment to import this file into FCPX and knows why it comes in flat, I’d be grateful.

Yes. A few layers were text layers and contained drop shadows. I know layer effects don’t pass through so I created new layers and stamped the titles with shadows. I figured that it would only import the layers that it could (ie: the stamped layers). Are you saying that if there any layers with effects on it that the entire thing will flatten?

Holy crap Bret, that was it. I had no idea it wouldn’t work if the caps lock was on. Grrr.

Select your project. Hit CMD+J to open up details in the inspector. Click Modify Settings and change the starting TC to whatever you want.
If you’re creating a new sequence, you can also hit CMD+N for a new project and click Use Custom Settings to change the TC there.

February 13, 2016 at 7:49 pm in reply to: Can FCPX be installed on a computer already running FCP 7?Larry, that was never really true. Since the beginning, installing FCPX would move FCP Studio apps into a separate folder in the applications folder, but they would still operate. IIRC, it would sometimes cause an alias malfunction for the moved apps, and there was always the issue where drivers for 3rd party hardware like AJA and Blackmagic cards could have problems when running both systems.
The easiest/safest solve for all that is simply to create a boot drive with an older version of OSX on it and install only FCP7 there. Then on my main boot drive, I keep my modern apps. Because FCP7 is falling farther and farther behind the modern world of codecs and camera formats and it performs worse on each successive OS update. Best to keep a locked down boot drive setup for FCP7.

February 7, 2016 at 12:43 am in reply to: Quick way to change title attributes to numerous titles at onceThis might be an end around, but could you open the title in Motion, turn on the drop shadow with your specific values and then save as a new title? Then you could select all the titles in your project and double click the new title in the browser to replace all the old titles with the new one. Seems like that might work.

Unless they’ve made changes in the recent iterations of FCPX, then you are correct. Motion blur doesn’t carry over to FCPX from Motion.
In those cases, I export QT movies w/alphas and composite in FCPX.
