Does this sound to you like a bug or does it give you a clue to something else that might be happening here.”
Possibly. It’s a little hard to say. Sometimes rig behavior can be a little murky and certain things can cause rigs to behave in a weird manner. Snapshots often screw up rigs too. But adding and deleting a snapshot makes me think that Motion thought there was a snapshot attached to the project which was wresting control of the parameter from the assigned widget and your add/delete cleared its “head” so to speak.
I’m glad it’s working for you now. Perhaps you just got a little gremlin behavior.

December 3, 2013 at 2:02 am in reply to: Problem with a widget in a rig losing control of its target parameterIt would be difficult without sitting in front of your project to see what it’s doing, but it sounds to me like the point at which you’re losing control of your rig will probably coincide with a particular effect/behavior/layer in your project that’s taking control of the parameter away from your widget. Try to find the first frame where you lose control and then look through all your layers/effects/masks/behaviors to see what begins on that same frame. turn that layer off and see if your widget maintains control.

November 29, 2013 at 5:38 pm in reply to: Problem with Particle Trail and Short Motion PathIf you don’t need 3D animation via a camera or need the particles to float away off the tail, then you’re going to have more flexibility by using a bezier or b-spline shape. Or you could render out the 400 frame animation and speed it up in your NLE.

It’s possible that some clip in that scene is causing the problems. It’s going to be difficult to figure anything out without being in front of the computer. You could try lifting the scene out of the project and working on it in its own project. You could try reimporting the clips used in that scene in case something went wonky when they were initially injested/created (but I’d hesitate to do that unless I could demonstrate the clips were at fault). It’s possible some effect being used is over-stressing the program in that scene.
These are only shots in the dark because I can’t sit down at the computer.

What’s your computer config? Also, take a look at the proxy files and note how big they are resolution wise and overall file size (for example, are the files long?).

Usually that means that proxy media has already been created for your media. Go into your preferences and choose Use Proxy media from the playback section. It’ll switch to using proxies instead of original files.

[Dennis Widmyer] “This is a 5K project, but even at 2K (in its own Project), this sequence is impossible to work with.”
When you say this, do you mean that you have encoded the 5K footage into 2K sized quicktimes or are you saying that you’re putting 5K footage into a 2K project? Because if it’s the latter, you’re not going to get any relief from your problems because FCPX is still accessing 5K files.
Since it’s a 5K project, I’m inclined to think that you’re just stressing your computer, particularly if you’re not using Pro Res files (ie: using r3d files). Have you tried transcoding your media to proxy files and working with them?

You have to make sure that the transition from black is disabled. Right click the transition and uncheck that option.

Let me add to that. I’d like the full screen feature to have some edit functions like IN and OUT and Favorite. Sometimes, especially if working off a laptop or smaller single monitor (like my sad computer), it’d be nice to review footage in full screen mode and mark INs, OUTs, favorites or even just cycle between clips. Instead I can’t do any of those things.
