  • Apply Transition to a title graphic ONLY

Posted by Michael Calcagno on November 4, 2012 at 4:10 pm

New to FCPX, and needing some help.

I have a basic simple text graphic I’m using as a lower third.

I would like to apply a directional blur transition to the title to bring it in and out. When I apply the transition to the title, the entire video clip is effected as well.

I would like to just apply the transition to the title graphic, NOT the video it’s over.

    Any help?

if you have Motion 5, this can be remedied easily. Right-click on the title effect and open in Motion. In Motion, deselect the Title Background layer. This is the Motion project’s placeholder for whatever piece of video you place the title over. With this off, the title will still work, but effects placed on the title will only affect the title. Save the copy. In FCPX, apply the adjusted copy of your title to the project and you’re good to go.

If you don’t have Motion 5, then your choices are limited. I think there are a few default titles in FCPX that don’t use the placeholder graphic (although I don’t know which off-hand). Another option would be to ask the fine people over at the Motion forum to provide you with a quick adjustment title that you could download, place in your Movies folder and go to work.

I think you can compound the title, then step into the compound clip, apply the transitions to the title, right click the transitions and turn of to/from black, step out of the compound. Hopefully, still trying to get it all figured out myself!

    david,

Thank you immensely! This worked exactly as I needed. A bit silly, unintuitive, but I guess it’s what we get for a more ‘robust’ fcp.

No problem Micheal! Credit goes to whoever posted that method, wherever it was that I read it…

I like to think of compound clips not only as a way to organize the timeline and apply effects to more than one clip simultaneously, but also as a way to isolate those clips from affecting the rest of the timeline. So any time you think, “how can I have X affect Y without affecting Z?” there’s probably a way to do it with a compound clip.

Thanks so much for offering this advice. This is completely unintuitive. But most of everything is that way in FCP X. 🙂 I am having an issue when I use this method, though.

I created the compound clip, added the transition to my graphic w/in the compound clip (the flip transition), but when I play the video the screen goes black while the transition occurs.

    Any clue?

    Thx!

You have to make sure that the transition from black is disabled. Right click the transition and uncheck that option.
