Well, if you’re dealing with complex images in Illustrator, then there’s a possible solution.

There is a script available that exports Illustrator layers as shape layers in Motion. From there you’d be able to turn off the fill and add an outline to the shape.

If the image was created in Photoshop, then import that into Illustrator and convert it to vector and apply the same script.

Way to swing for the fences on your first Motion project… 🙂

I just hope you don’t get frustrated with Motion trying to pull of this incredibly difficult FX shot (difficult because there was apparently no pre-production thought put into it).

My advice is to temper your expectations. With what you describe, even an experienced Motion or AE user might not be able to pull it off convincingly.

If I was given this shot, I would probably want shake or combustion or nuke to pull this off, not Motion.

Let’s see. I would create a replicator of white rectangles and use a sequence replicator behavior to randomly dissolve them on.

Type the text for the movie and use it as the source of an image mask for the replicator.

The easiest solution is to draw the mask as a shape using Motion’s shape tool. You can use the shape as a mask by applying the image mask to the layer you want to mask and using the shape as the source.

Then duplicate your shape and change the duplicate from fill to outline.

Mark Spencer has an excellent tutorial on his website called, “3D Cameras and Photoshop”. I believe the techniques featured were all accomplished in Motion 3.

It’s about half-way down the page.

  • Are your clips actually named with the “#” symbol in the file name? That is a special character which has significance to the OS, and I avoid special characters when naming clips.

I’m not sure if it’s related to your problem or not, but I would consider renaming your clips from Clip#1, to Clip_001.

When manually reconnecting, have you unchecked the “Matched Name and Reel Only” box?

What is the dpi of the tiffs? The resolution may be 1280×720, but if you have a high dpi, it will translate into a larger file which may be exceeding the capabilities of your gfx card.

What happens when you de-select the “fixed resolution” checkbox for the group containing your tiff sequence?

Are you saving your tiffs as layered files or single layers with transparency?

    Are the tiffs RGB?

You say you’re running 3 monitors. Does this mean that you have 2 gfx cards installed?

Motion has been known to have issues with computers running more than 1 gfx card although there has been some discussion as to whether or not that has been fixed. I don’t use 2 gfx cards, and I only own one monitor, so I don’t have experience with this, but here is a link to an apple support doc that mentions the issue.

February 24, 2010 at 8:07 pm in reply to: Making translucent cubes more easily in Motion 3?

There is, in fact an easier way to make a cube in Motion. By using the replicator. Motion’s not a 3D program like lightwave, but you can fake it a bit with this technique.

Check out the tutorial on my site where I make a “skyscraper” with this technique.

Are you checking the reflections box on the image, or on the “floor”?
