“Is this possible using replicator or particles? Can it be done in AE?”
Yes it’s possible with a replicator in Motion. It’s probably also possible in AE though since AE doesn’t have replicators, I’d hate to try.
In Motion create your replicator, change the shape to Sphere (you need the 3D button checked). Then fill as an outline and click the align angle button.
Tweaking your rows and columns should give you the look you want. Keep in mind that you’ll need a LOT of images to cover the surface area of a sphere so this will likely slow down the processor quite a bit.

October 19, 2010 at 4:50 pm in reply to: How to make a paint stroke connect 2 objects in 3D space? The local 3D control button allows the paint dabs to face the camera to give the appearance of 3D. Unfortunately Local 3D does not allow for true 3D orientation. In other words, a paint stroke will always appear in front of a layer that it’s above in the layers tab without respect to that layers 3D position.
I missed that you were animating with the framing behavior. With the emitter though, you can animate it with a Motion Path behavior where the start point is the position of your first layer and the end point is the position of your second layer. Motion paths can be adjusted in 3D space more easily than paint strokes.
However, if you want to stick with a paint stroke, you need draw it first and then rotate it 90 degrees and position it. But as you’ve already discovered, it’s kind of difficult to get it in a proper position because you only have XY coordinates for the shape and not XYZ.

Probably the best solution would be to use an emitter as your stroke since emitters can be 3D. Then animate the emitter along the same motion path as the camera (you could just duplicate the behavior for the emitter if you want and then offset it a bit).

“Video can have noise though, which might as well be grain in terms of the way it affects the image.”
Film grain and Video noise could be construed as similar in only the barest of criteria. Since film grain actually affects how an image is produced, and video noise is merely a distortion of a video signal, I’d have to say that they are no where near alike in the way they affect the image.
The OP was confusing because I couldn’t tell if he just wanted to add noise to his video or actually match specific film stocks. I still don’t really know although it sounds closer to the latter. There are high quality plugins that are actually used to match one film stock to another because you can’t always film with the same stock. Just adding noise to one is not likely to match very well.

Video doesn’t have grain. Film does. If you’re trying to match film grains, you could try Magic Bullet.

I don’t know what to tell you. I use the Wacom Intuos 3, and simply dragging and holding does the trick. It’s no different than a mouse. My only suggestion is to look in the tablet’s preferences to make sure there isn’t something there that’s preventing it from working (not likely, but it’s worth a look).

You gave up too quickly. You could have done it with shape layers and a replicator in Motion and by using an image mask on your original image.

You could export via Compressor and use the cropping capabilities there to adjust the size of the exported frame. But you may want to convert out of HDV if you’re planning on compositing elsewhere. HDV is not a good codec of FX work.

Yes, I viewed both clips as you did: side by side through firewire to an external monitor. I saw no change in the clips, and the waveform and vector scopes looked identical as well.

September 11, 2010 at 9:54 pm in reply to: Double Alpha Overlays and Tranisions In Apple MotionWell, without seeing the way the effect is presented, it’ll be hard to help you. However, if part of the transition is a black and white clip, then I would use an image mask to bring out the transparency element.
