[Scott Sheriff] “[Rich Kaelin] “3. I hear that FCPX is missing a lot of features real editors would be loathe to give up.”
You heard right. No tape I/O, no XML, no OMF, no multi-cam, no ability to open legacy projects, no way to share a project with another editor due to file structure, no way to assign tracks.”
See, this is part of the mis-information that the OP is talking about. Your statement is accurate to some point, but also inaccurate. It’s hard for people to know what to believe when blanket claims are thrown around.
FCP X does not offer tape I/O EXCEPT with firewire devices. The import from camera feature allows for “Capture Now” capability for cameras connected via firewire. I have a DVCPro deck connected with FW and I can capture fine from tape. However, you cannot Log and Capture tape, nor can you go back to tape in any manner. This will likely be fixed as Apple and 3rd party capture card manufacturers address it, but that’s where it stands now.
The “no way to share a project” is also misleading. Projects and events can be duplicated and moved for use on another machine very easily. In fact, it’s simpler than FCP 7. In addition, media can be stored in a shared storage environment that more than one editor can see, and then the project (sequence) can be duplicated and moved to another edit bay for use with another editor. No, there isn’t true project sharing such as Avid has, but FCP has never had that.
[Scott Sheriff] “[Rich Kaelin] “4. In direct relation to 3, I hear FCPX is a “work in progress” and will have many upgrades soon to come, in other words, it was released too early and incomplete.”
IMO, this is just spin used to placate those that are angry.”
HAHAHAHA! Well, THAT sure worked.
[Scott Sheriff] “I believe they had no intention of adding the ‘missing features’ because they have a new sales demographic that didn’t need them.”
I don’t understand that argument at all. One of the largest complaints against FCP X is that Apple is clearly going after the consumer/prosumer market. After all, Apple already HAD that market with iMovie and FCP. It’s not like Avid or Adobe had the lion share of that market before 6-21. If you were a consumer and you owned a mac, and wanted to get into editing, you used either iMovie or FCP. Yes, despite the fact that FCP 7 is in use at high-level production facilities and used to cut feature films, its intuitive nature and attractive price point made it an easy decision for budding videographers, student filmmakers and others. For those who thought it was too much, they have iMovie, installed on their computer when they bought it. For those in this market with PCs, what do you expect FCP X has that FCP and iMovie combined couldn’t do to tempt them into buying a Mac?
Also, today’s consumer/prosumer might be tomorrow’s pro. You think they’ll be happy with FCP X’s currently limited features? There are people right now shooting wedding videos with multiple DSLRs who are going to want multicam, and to see what the video will look like on an external monitor.

It’s hard to say without seeing it first hand. However, media isn’t stored in the project folder. It’s stored in the Final Cut Events/Original Media folder. The project folder contains the project.
Make sure you have the correct event selected when you import or start a new one. Make sure you’re aware of the drive you are importing to, and whether you have enough space on it.
Confirming all that, you can try deleting your preferences to see if a corruption is preventing FCP X from seeing the file. You also need to confirm whether a file is actually being digitized. You may be able to do a finder search for recent files.

[Rafael Amador] “Even not working multi-layers, layers are fundamental.”
Layers exist in FCP X. Just not tracks.
[Rafael Amador] “My sequence layers are my “Finder” when I work in FCP. I put in any upper layer everything I want to have at hand.”
This is an example of how we often do not want to re-evaluate the way we work because it’s the way we’ve always worked. Personally, I find this method of throwing junk on upper layers to be extremely silly, but whatever, it’s the way you work. Sure you can’t edit in this exact same fashion in FCP X, but they did actually provide a means for another “popular” junk method. Many editors throw shots that they may use at the end of their sequences past any edited work. FCP X has the Append Clip shortcut (E) which will throw your junk shots at the end so you can grab them later. Same basic workflow, just at the end of the timeline, rather than above it.
[Rafael Amador] “I want my gaps back too. As my story has holes and I need to see them at first sight and in their real magnitude.”
Gaps exist in FCP X. Use the position tool (P) to create them. It’s just a reversal of the default in FCP 7 where you have to delete unwanted gaps. In this case you have to create “wanted” gaps. My only peeve is that I wish they’d have a gap clip in the generators tab similar to the Slug clip in FCP 7. However, now, it’s actually quite similar to the Avid “filler” paradigm.
[Rafael Amador] “I want to be able to have many sequences and projects open at the same time.”
The sequences are easily and readily available for switching back and forth. True, you can’t have two sequence windows torn off and showing on screen at the same time, but if you’re copying from one sequence into another, or comparing one version to another, it works fine for that.
[Rafael Amador] “I want a full customizable project in terms of settings.”
Well, we agree on that at least. I certainly want more control over the working environment and how things are displayed. For example, why can’t I have big track icons without the filmstrip. Heck, I’d even settle for a single thumbnail over the filmstrip look. However, there is quite a bit you can change in the interface that people assume you can’t. Not enough for my taste, but for now it’s workable.

I understand what he’s planning. In my opinion he should have the computer create the interpolated frames BEFORE dropping the frame rate. It seems to me more likely to create a good quality slo-mo. Check this out:

August 15, 2011 at 5:37 pm in reply to: Scrubber bar in FCPX? Or a decent way to seek within a long clip?Yeah, not sure why you can’t add transitions to connected clips, but there is a workaround. Make the connected clips into a compound clip. Then you can add transitions.

You should not conform to 24 until after the speed change or else you’ll lose the benefit of the extra frames that were shot.

August 11, 2011 at 7:42 am in reply to: Write on behaviour with the writing nib changing shape — is it possible? Here’s how I’d do it based on your description:
Draw your letter as a paint stroke. Change the stroke from Solid to Airbrush or image. Create a thin oval using the circle tool. Use this oval as the shape for the dabs in the paint stroke.
In the stroke section of the shape tab in the inspector, there is a parameter called Angle over stroke. It rotates the dabs over the length of the stroke (like rotating the nib of a pen). You just put keyframes in the angle over stroke graph to tell it where to turn.
There is also a width over stroke parameter if you want to control the falloff at the end and beginning of strokes.
Sorry, no project to share.

August 10, 2011 at 4:05 pm in reply to: Need to use pieces of several projects into another projectNice tip Tom. I only wish they made it more intuitive like allowing you to create compound clips from the project into an event or even allowing drag and drop of compound clips into events. Add it to the list I suppose.
