[Brian Vedholm] “I prefer to improve my skills using software to be found at larger production houses not just on my own workstation.”

You just answered your own question. It’s Avid. It’s too early to tell how much of the post house industry Adobe might be able to ensnare because most the places depending on FCP are not switching right away. FCP7 has a couple more years of relevance on it (more for some, less for others). Those that need to update soon are most likely to go with Avid more out of sense of familiarity. Some places are even holding off to see what comes in the next update of FCPX (since Apple actively said that multicam and video out are to be included).

You can TRY to predict the future of post, but if you want to futureproof yourself, I’d learn both Premiere and FCPX and Avid. There’s not a lot of difference between Avid, and Premiere if you come from an FCP background, so FCPX is the only one that might take a little getting used to.

Strangely I thought you could adjust the Y rotation in the normal transform section of a video clip, but it looks like you can’t. You’ll need to build an effect in Motion to give you that ability, or else find someone like Simon or Brendon who’ve probably already built one.

  • [Jeremy Garchow] “I have a custom naming scheme setup to name the clips 60p_”OriginalName”.mov”

I’m confused Jeremy. Why bother with the customized naming conventions? You can just create a smart collection that collects all your 59.94 fps material without needing to name it.

  • [Craig Seeman] “Oh, there’s that funny new language thing. Am I starting an Event or a Project or maybe neither? Collections aren’t tied to Projects.”

True. Usually I have to self-edit as I write to convert standard NLE terminology into FCPX terminology. I did indeed meant “drag and drop whole clips into collections at the start of your event”.

It’s the one aspect of the new FCP that I really and truly hate. In my opinion, there was never a GOOD reason to change terminology around. I know WHY they did it…to have a base set of terms that spanned a number of their products (iphoto, imovie, FCPX), but that is FAR from a good reason. Everything doesn’t have to fit into the same box. /rant

All you need to do is have your gfx on the primary storyline and your video connected above it. Then select the video and in the inspector, resize the video down, position it where you like and adjust the Y rotation to give it a 3D “twist”.

October 29, 2011 at 7:01 pm in reply to: Transitions and Keyframes

    1) If you’re applying a transition to a text layer connected to a clip in the primary storyline, FCPX will create a secondary storyline for your text layer and apply the transition to the head of it. It should only apply a transition to both layers if both layers are selected in the timeine.

    2) You’ll have to explain that one more. What specifically are you trying to animate? How specically are you trying to animate it? And what specifically is happening when you try?

    3) Text animations and effects can be edited by opening the project in Motion 5 which you need if you want to do that sort of thing. Presuming you have Motion 5 installed, simply right-click on an effect or title in the effects browser and choose: Open a Copy in Motion. If you don’t have Motion 5, the only changes you can make are in the inspector.

  • [Craig Seeman] “I might have an Audio folder which includes Keyword Collections: Sound FX, Music, Wild (non sync) sound.”

Exactly. That is the use to which I prefer using folders with collections. Folders create a structure which allows you to find the collection you want at a glance. You can use them however you keep organized, but I suggest starting with broad categories and working your way to more specificity. Craig’s example is a perfect illustration of that.

And though there are many ways to keyword a clip or range, this is what I use for a rule of thumb: Drag and drop into collections at the start of your project, selecting several clips at a time and dumping them into organizational bins. When you then get to the point of keywording portions of clips, I will often use the keyword editor as I find the shortcut keys easier than dragging a range. But really there’s no wrong way to do it. Whatever’s fastest for you.

October 29, 2011 at 6:26 pm in reply to: FCPX Keyframes BUSTED!

It does indeed feel wrong to me. I’m not a fan of the current set up for keyframing transformations in FCPX. The initial workflow is fine: click on the transform button in the viewer and hit a start keyframe and go. But the result is non-intuitive, and making changes to keyframe position and interpolation is clumsy.

I also don’t like the video animation menu in the timeline for adjusting keyframe temporal position. It’s actually a good idea wrapped in poor execution. I would like to see shortcuts where you only reveal the parameter you want to adjust (say opacity) instead of seeing an entire stack of things with little tiny disclosure triangles. The thing I want to use it for most is creating adjusting opacity keyframes. In FCP 7 it was extremely easy. Creating a dedicated shortcut for opacity only would solve that problem.

But with the transform section of the video animation menu, you don’t have an easy, foolproof way of selecting and moving XY scale or position keyframes at once. Sure you can tell it to display like that, but I found that trying to adjust XY scale inside the animation menu is extremely problematic.

Therefore, my solution. It’s a kluge, but I find it easier to deal with at least until keyframing transform is fixed/modified. If I were faced with the move you wanted to make, I would blade the clip into the sections of the move and apply the Ken Burns affect to them.

I think you need a catchier name for it though.

October 27, 2011 at 9:21 pm in reply to: Apple Pro Res and H264 –same sequence even possible?

[Margaret Dill Andrea] “In movie inspector of a converted ProRes test — it says

    Apple ProRes 422, 1920 × 1080 (1888 × 1062), Millions
    16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz”

You’re good. If it says 16-bit Integer (Big Endian), then it’s already in a useable format. It would say AAC or MP3 (or Mpeg) in the info if it was one of the compressed, unusable formats.

Also, just to clarify from my first post, I wanted to imply that you could change the preset to convert prores content to aif while converting the video, but I guess I didn’t make that clear. Luckily David did.
