Sorry Paul. I didn’t see that you’re talking about FCP 7. This is the FCPX forum. You’d be better off posting in the straight FCP forum which deals with FCP7 and earlier.
However, in 7, all you need to do is adjust the scale in the Motion tab of the inspector or use the canvas controls. Here’s how it works.
Motion Tab:
Double-click your image to load it into the viewer. Click on the Motion tab and adjust the scale.
Canvas Controls:
In the canvas, click the rightmost button in that row of 3 buttons at the top. Choose Image and Wireframe. Select your jpeg in the timeline and drag one of the points to scale it up and reposition it. You can have more room to work with if you zoom the canvas out by making sure the canvas is selected and hitting CMD – to zoom out and CMD + to zoom in.

There’s also the possibility that Motion 5’s rigging and publishing capabilities will be increased over time. No custom UIs are available in FCPX’s inspector, but perhaps new controls will be added that clever plug-in manufactures can make good use out of.

In answer to your question, yes. What you see is what you get in the viewer. You can use the transform tool to scale and position your still so that it doesn’t show the video below it, or if you prefer the black, drop a black solid generator clip in between the bottom video and the jpeg.

Peter. Re-read my post. I did not suggest changing the interpolation to continuous. I said to change it to constant. Constant interpolation means that a gradient will keep one color constantly until it hits the next color tag and then it will change immediately to the next color without any mix between the two.

If all you’re talking about is a feature request for compound clips, here’s what I’d like.
• Drag and drop of compound clips into the Event Browser.
• I would like to see markers show up in the filmstrip viewer for compound clips that have been opened from the browser in Timeline mode. In other words, open an event compound in timeline mode, place a marker on the clip. Then exit out and when you select that CC, you can see the marker in the filmstrip viewer.
• Be able to right-click a compound clip and have a “remove sub-clip limits” type of command so that you can expand the size of a compound created in the timeline without having to open it in timeline mode first.
Let me know if any of those are confusing.

In addition to what Mark said, there is an Interpolation parameter for the gradient editor. If you change the interpolation to constant, then books will either be one color or the other without any variance between.

Hey Fred. Someone brought this to my attention awhile back. There appears to be a bug in Motion 5 where shape animation isn’t being respected inside the mask which is why it’s not working properly. I suggested sending feedback to Apple via the feedback menu to make them aware of the bug. The more feedback they get, the more likely this will get fixed.
The only workaround I could find is to export the animated shape as a prores 4×4 clip and reimport to use as the mask source.

Well, you can assign Go To Start/End to different keys, but SHIFT+I/O has always worked fine for me.
I understand the frustration with losing IN/OUT points. I honestly hope it’s on the list of feature upgrades. I’ve gotten very used to using F to favorite/save my selects or my IN/OUT points. I actually like the fact that hitting up/down arrow will select a new clip in the browser even if the timeline is active. Dropping clips into the timeline quickly without mouse click is easier than ever because of that. But it will get you occasionally until you’ve un-learned that particular bit of muscle memory.

Also, if you click the crop icon in the viewer, you’ll find the Ken Burns effect although it may be more manual than iMovie, I don’t know how it works there.

Interesting workflow, although I would probably just detach the audio from the original clip and do a straight replace edit. If the clips were of unequal lengths, I would place the marker on the detached audio at the sync point. Then when I place a sync marker in the replace footage, I can use the trim tool to line them up.
Still would be much easier if they just gave us a standard replace edit function.
