Got a link Mark? Every other direct quote from Intel that I recall seeing has said that Thunderbolt will not be something you can add, and that it needs to be on the motherboard.

It’s new tech mate, thats all she wrote … Intel have been working on it for the last couple years, Apple couldn’t just halt production until it was ready. At some point they have to decide its ready, and that point didn’t come in time for the last MacPro release but did make the new MacBookPro release. And besides, its good business. This is game changing tech with a real “must have” buzz, so when Apple is ready to release a new MacPro revision with Thunderbolt technology on the motherboard then folks will want to buy new ones despite having darn good older models already … thats good business for Apple. The business of post-production is constantly riding the wave of new tech … its cool, but every now and again we have to paddle back out if we want to ride along with every one else, thats just the nature of it.

That’s a good question … unfortunately the answer, as far as I can tell, is no they wont. The first showing of Thunderbolt as seen in the 2011 MBP’s is built purely on the copper connectivity spec, it’s not built for optics. Intel are apparently still working on that, although in the meantime they look to be introducing some optical cabling later this year that should extend existing connectivity well beyond the current 3 meter limit.

“Q” toggles focus between Canvas/Timeline and Viewer … so just press F9 then Q or F10 then Q etc … and yes, it is a bit backwards, or rather, there should be some way for the user to dictate if and where the focus should move.

More details for your consideration:

If you edit footage to the timeline using the keyboard shortcuts (F9, F10 etc) then the Timeline window takes focus after the edit.
But if you edit footage using drag and drop to the Canvas window overlays (or buttons) then the Viewer window keeps focus after the edit.

A high quality self contained master of your finished edit is no bad thing to have Bret … if you tend to work in DV, mastering to DV etc this does not preclude archiving a much higher quality file based master, I think most of us will do this as a matter of course regardless of edit codec. If you have such a master then using it as a source directly in Compressor for repurposing for DVD, web etc is usually going to be faster and more convenient than the direct Send To option from FCP. But certainly I wouldn’t dispute that “every little counts sometimes” and your understanding of FCP 7’s “Send To” is correct, as in that method will preserve whatever quality is available without intermediate compression.

don’t stop there Jay .. you could have the MXO2, a Thunderbolt RAID and your monitor etc all connected via the MBP’s Thunderbolt port … and then use the ExpressCard slot to store cotton buds for polishing the finer details of all that fancy Thunderbolt stuff 🙂

No … its more likely the whole directory structure Steve. As I alluded to before, not all tapeless media can be instantly recognized and handled by FCP’s Log and Transfer, indeed a specific Log and Transfer plugin must be written for every different data structure that needs to be supported … either that or the camera manufacturer must adhere to an already supported data structure. I’d guess that no amount of tweaking that XML is going to make FCP suddenly read your camera’s particular DCIM folder structure and data and handle it all for you, interpreting the time and date stamp in the XML etc.

Not all tapeless media sources are natively recognizable by Log and Transfer … Steve is telling us here that this camera does NOT work with Log and Transfer. He has to import and transcode manually and is looking for a way to avoid that. Nothing to do with the data copy in this instance I think.

I’m not aware of any published specs available for writing your own Log and Transfer plugin, tho it may well be out there … but it will not be trivial. If you balk at the though of “I could import the file, xml export it, then add markers, in frames, manually…… easy not!)” then you will not likely be happy coding your own Log and Transfer plugin.
