    Turn on Unlimited RT

Click the “RT” button at top left of the Timeline window and in the drop down menu that appears you can switch from Safe RT to Unlimited RT. If you don’t see those options then you are not working with a Sequence codec that supports what you are trying to do … in which case post back with more details about your source footage, sequence settings and importantly, what your delivery target is. Someone will likely be able to help point you in the right direction.

    Cheers

    >I’m assuming those currently using an MXO2 mini w/ an express card would be able to simply buy a TB connector instead of purchasing a whole new MXO2 Mini w/ TB?

Yep, that would certainly be my guess. Down the line, TB native, but in the interim TB adaptors.

[Trevor Asquerthian] “Great I can edit with XDCam or whatever in the timeline and right click and ‘media manage’ to recompress it to my sequence codec, with handles. But I have to manually reconnect that clip… “

If you Media Manage a sequence (and hence all its contained clip instances) rather than the master clips themselves, and use the option to “Duplicate selected items and place into a new project”, then the duplicate sequences (in the new project) are already linked to the newly managed media.

[Trevor Asquerthian] “Also with the clips in the browser (and these are ‘create master clips’ clips as I only have sequences in my projects) I can’t ‘consolidate’ as I understand it – because it will be the full length master clip, rather then a selection of subclips as contained in the sequence… so any help here gratefully received.”

As above, the trick is in managing the sequence rather than the master clips. In your particular workflow you might sort your master clips by Source, select all that you wish to flag, and apply a colored label to them (Modify menu > Label…). Now in the sequence you should be able to easily see where the flagged clips lie. You might then break out these areas into separate sequences and then Media Manage only those sequences as needed into a new duplicate project, then copy those managed sequences or sequence content back into your master project or master sequence.

At this point tho, its really probably a good time to give Bouke Vahl’s FCPreconnect app another plug. If you’ve never looked at it then you really should. This excellent tool would open up another whole sphere of possibilities with regards to workflows for yo,u and might just be what you need to help you work the way you want to work, rather than the way FCP wants you to work. [Jason Brown] “…if you are using Matrox I/O or the Max chip in the I/O box for h264 encoding you need an ExpressCard slot. “

On that point Jason, we’ve already been speculating (in another thread) that Thunderbolt host bus adaptors for existing PCIe over Cable devices are highy likely to appear, at which point those devices would no longer be tethered solely to ExpressCard … hence the topic of the thread.

[Jason Brown] “U would also need it if you have any eSATA devices.”

    Same speculation again.

For those working with SxS cards ( although I’d expect to see Thunderbolt adaptors for SxS come to market in due course too) I would think the dedicated ExpressCard slot definitely remains a major attraction.

    Sorry David
It’s the long slow path with this one I’m afraid. Boris hides all their plugin instance data in a big old chunk of bits and bytes thats not human readable … so theres no way to translate your existing text generators to Title 3D text in one fell swoop.
    Sad but true

Unless or until the third party vendors currently using ExpressCard host bus adaptors for their products bring Thunderbolt host bus adaptors for those same product to market then yes, the slots are still pretty darn useful for the existing products. As we move into the future we may very likely see the same third party vendors dropping the ExpressCard adaptors from their newer products … but that is then, not now. Also consider that Thunderbolt allows 2 full duplex 10 Gb channels … add an ExpressCard and you have an additional 5Gb channel. Thats a good thing. More is more.

Yep, thats the way it reads to me Jay … but keep an eye on Gary Adcock’s blog for more info, he tends to be pretty well informed and just posted that he’ll be reviewing the new Thunderbolt tech in his blog.

Don’t make this harder than it needs to be Trevor, just let Media Manager (re)consolidate everything.

Fwiw, you can display the “Source” column in the Browser to more easily isolate which media needs to be consolidated vs that which doesn’t … but this won’t help with the relinking which will still need to be done after the fact (as using Media Manager to copy media does not change the reference to the original media source in the exiting project).
