i think multiclip shows a lot of promise, but there does seem to be quite widespread trouble with using it. its something new to master.

if anyone is just jumping in on the new multiclip features, theres actually a pretty good basic tutorial over at Ken Stones excellent website

i reckon i’ve pretty much nailed the browser multiclip now …. but the sequence multiclip, man, i didn’t even know it existed till you mentioned it (and i’m supposed to be demoing it on Thursday! looks like i’ve got some work to do)

sorry to hear you’re having some trouble there.
i don’t know if this makes it better or worse, but i can tell you that we have 33 FCP / G5 systems running both Panther+v4.5 and Tiger+v5 and none of them have the lag you describe.

does the lag appear only with specific codecs or only when dealing with high bitrates?

if you have any success in diagnosing the problem i’d love to hear … i’m freelancing today, and they have 4 G5 based Avid Adrenaline systems and they all have exactly the same lag as you describe, its a nightmare to work with. (in this instance i’m pretty sure they’re just poorly setup, i’ve never seen this on a PC based Adrenaline)

what are you capturing from? what hardware? is this DV coming over Firewire, or maybe a BetaSP deck connected to a Decklink card? or ….

if your first clips were ok then somethings happened to the signal … try unplugging and replugging your cables, or even switching cables altogether. you need to narrow down the source of the problem … deck, cables, connectors, capture card etc.

I did think about using a drop down, or just make the slider snap to particular values … its just for my own personal needs, i’m rarely tring to conform to a standard, but just to get the best compromise for cleaning subtitles

still, for reference, I ran a quick test and came up with the following numbers for my otherwise arbitrary scale:

19 = 1.66:1 (35 mm European widescreen standard, also Super 16 mm)
21 = 1.70:1 (VistaVision)
25 = 1.78:1 (video widescreen standard 16:9)
27 = 1.85:1 (35 mm US and UK widescreen standard / HDTV Standard)
43 = 2.35:1 (35 mm anamorphic)
47 = 2.55:1 (CinemaScope)
55 = 3.00:1 (Cinerama)

and fwiw my plug is just an adaptation of the mask shape filter anyway 🙂

sorry, I wasn’t meaning to be flippant. it does sound like a very strange situation ….

you’re saying that FCP works just fine, launching and quiting the app, opening, closing and working on multiple projets; but when you plug-in this particular drive, regardless of the project thats open, then FCP starts searching for files? or at least, if you launch FCP with this drive plugged in, then it immediately starts searching for these phantom files? do you have your preferences set to reopen last project on application launch? but anyway, it doesn’t first tell you which files are missing, and ask you to reconnect and THEN start searching ??

well, certainly it doesn’t sound like any kind of ‘normal’ issue, which makes it extermely difficult for others to diagnose ‘remotely’ as it were. and I guess what I’m saying is, that in these instances, its often less important to know exactly what got screwed up, and why, in favour of just fixing the problem.

i’d have to say, i’m not convinced that reformating the drive will necessarily fix the problem. it seems unlikely that there is anything on the drive that is indentifying itself to FCP and causing this to happen. its just maybe worth a try.
another course of action would be the usual FCP preference trashing routine … or even a full reinstall of FCP?

seems like theres no problem switching audio only, as long as you want to switch all the audio. looking at the manual, it looks like the limitation is on switching only specific tracks, within the multiclip.

i think you’re probably already on the best track for your two camera edit. use the features of multiclip as best you can. take all the audio when you need to change audio source only, then collapse your edit and go in and tweak as needed.
