Quick question about QT Pro licences…

I use 2 legit copies of FCP, one is 3.0 the other is 4.5. I therefore had QuickTime Pro 6 installed on each system.

One of my editors upgraded both systems to QT 7 (standard), and we now have lost all the Pro functionality (however, FCP seems to be working properly, is this normal ?)

I would like to know if having FCP 3 and 4.5 entitles us to free upgrades to QT Pro 7 ? or do we have to pay 2X 30$ for each system being upgraded to QT Pro 7 ?

If the latter, is it possible to come back to QT Pro 6 and how ?

I don’t think we need QT Pro 7 yet, and find it frustrating to have to pay 60$ USD for it for our 2 systems.

Not to mention I’ve read a couple of comments about ver. 7 making some bad things with color in HD clips, etc.

Please help me shed some light on what I must do to have 2 working copies of QT Pro, 6 or 7 (if it’s now buggish).

Thanks in advance, and best regards.

    Hey Marco

you can download a Quicktime 6.5.2 ‘downgrade’ from Apples support pages
    https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652reinstallerforquicktime701.html

    hope it helps

Should I go QT Pro 7 or not if I’m using FCP 3.0 and 4.5 ?

Or shall I take the QT 6.5.2 downgrade route ? (I don’t feel too secure about this…)

I don’t want to mess up 2 production systems, simply don’t have time for this…

    Thanks again in advance

p.s.: I’ve just tried entering my QT Pro 6 reg number in the QT Pro 7 reg dialog box, and as I expected, it says Invalid Registration… 🙁

I’d stay at QT 6 if your not running FCP 5. FCP 4.5 running in OS 10.3.8 and QT 6.5.2 is awesome. Why change a winning combo? When it’s compelling to upgrade, FCP 5.0.2 running on OS 10.4.2 and QT 7.01 is also a very stable setup, but only on systems setup as a totally clean install of the OS and the apps… There is an uninstaller for QT 7 https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652reinstallerforquicktime701.html

You don’t need QT Pro to run FCP at all by the way… and you will have to pay for a pro key unless you upgrade to FCP 5. (comes with the pro install of QT 7)

I’d set up your editors permissions so that users aren’t a system administrator and can’t update the OS and software. Or install downloaded software either.

    Thanks a lot Jerry,

You answered all my questions. I will downgrade to QT 6.5.2. As you said, why change a winning combo ?

Also, from your message I understand that whenever I choose to upgrade to Tiger and FCP 5, it will be better if I do a clean install rather than doing an OS upgrade, followed by an app upgrade ? I must admit this seems a bit daunting, considering all the applications I and tweaks I have installed over time… 🙁

    Thanks Bret,

I never had to do this until now. But I might have to put a thought into it after all…

None of the apps require / run better if they have admin privileges ?

We use FCP, After Effect Pro bundle, DVD Studio Pro, Squeeze, Cleaner, Photoshop, Illustrator, Macromedia Studio, etc.

You will be miles ahead when upgrade time comes if you buy another HD to setup for the new system setup… leaving the old startup disk for backup reasons… that way you could copy and paste plugins, fonts, etc… until you are happy that the new setup is OK…

But do things in this order… Install Tiger, run Software update… install the Studio (don’t just buy FCP 5 BUY THE STUDIO!) Install it all, then run Software Update again. Repair permissions…
